Welcome to Librarium Online!
In my Tau army I was planning on having 3 squads of 20 kroot with some krootox and kroot hounds. I was wondering are kroot worth it????? I think they would be great to keep units good in cc away from your fire warriors. What do you guys think about them and how do you use them during a battle???
If you're going to have that many kroot it better be a big game. I would say that in a regular sized game (1500 or 2000 points) one 15 strong squad with a shaper and some hounds is plenty. This unit is big enough to take casualties and it's also pretty nasty in assault.
The enemies of the Emperor fear many things. They fear discovery, defeat, despair and death. Yet there is one thing they fear above all others. They fear the wrath of the Space Marines!
i normaly field about 2 units of 12. i dont normally give them any upgrades for armour cus most of the time they just hide in woods untill the enemy gets to them and the woods give a 6+ cover save. Also kroot can dish out alot of attacks, 3 on the charge each so deffinently inlude them in ur army
I cant picture you needing more than 1 or 2 squads of Kroot. I know its tempting to charge with them, but then you have to deal with your crappy I. Also, who needs Krootox when you have railguns? To quote a friend of mine, wha-what the hell?the woods give a 6+ cover save
Hive Fleet Furi Kuri 32/21/4
Tomb Kings: 8/5/2
Im in ur Halo, killin ur covernantz
2 squads of 12.
infiltrate out of LOS (12" away)
48 Str4 shots on turn one
all for 168 points
not bad for a good "distraction"
Ill probably skim it down to 1 squads of kroot thanks for the advice.
Also, a note, kroot hounds are worth their points in CC. However, a krootox should never be fielded in anything except a pure kroot army, and then thats iffy.
Also, Boxant, I'm fairly sure you meant infilitrate 18" away, and then thought of moving that extra six to put it into 12" and rapid fire range, but just wanted to clarify. Yes, people tend to forget that for 7 points, you can have a nice bolter on your side that can possibly chew into someone first turn.
No, i meant 12".Originally posted by Maus154@Oct 17 2004, 19:33

Dang, my mistake. Forgot that if you were out of line of sight it could be 12", but otherwise it was 18" unless the mission specified otherwise. Still, I'd prefer the 18" away, at least out of range of retaliation should you not be lucky enough to go first, no point in being 12" unless you intend to charge, in which case you couldnt shoot that turn.
actually, woods will give them a 5+ cover save, and with the addition of fieldcraft further increases it to a 4+ cover save.Originally posted by fish brain@Oct 17 2004, 14:48

The kroot are great against nids, just as long as you use them like fire warriors, but you don't have to regret moving withing rapid fire distance with these, since after they shoot their 20+ shots they'll have a lot better chances to deal with the remaining bugs than FWs.
kroot help against necrons. they can infiltrate and keep them out of your hair, especially if the 'cron player decides to use his wraiths to try and kill the kroot, that's an extra turn or two you don't have to worry about the wraiths turbo-boosting to your front lines. their initiative is higher than the standard warrior, so with a large squad you actually have a decent chance of trimming off the harder to kill units.
kroot hounds, amazing. 6pts each they are well worth the fast attack slot. cheaper than a kroot, faster in close combat. automatic wound when the enemy falls back.
the bigger the squad the better, with the assault rules, the outnumbering can really help you clean up the assault. I really sugjest upgrading their armor, although most weapons peirce their armor, the extra point of leadership can be a determining factor in combat.
in a kroot squad you cannot outnumber the normal kroot carnivores with the other types of add-ons. but even then, you can make a pretty hefty squad. 19kroot-1shaper-18hounds-9krootox for a total of 48 models in the squad
i would highly sugjest in mose cases, if you plan on not taking a full squad, take as many hounds as you can. they're 2 points cheaper than an upgraded kroot and still retain the extra stuff you didn't paid for.
