There is an Escalation league starting up at my local hobby shop, and I wanted to run some fun Nids lists (at least semi-competitive). One unit that I never see anyone talking about is the Shrike. It's a Warrior with Wings added for the low cost of just 5 points. I can understand not running Warriors because they tend to get shot up before they see combat, but wouldn't the Wings counter that particular problem?
Is it that they can still be one-shot killed for the price? One Vindicator shot could wipe out a squad of 3...

I feel like that is pretty much why people kinda stay away from them.
I mean, if you can get a brood of shrikes into close combat, then youre going to do damage. but being able to get them to your enemy before getting clipped is hard. and once you are in close combat, they still wont last that long.
I always wanted to field them, just never got around doing so.
I think a major reason is shrikes get outclassed on a lot of their roles.
want quick synapse? just put wings on a hive tyrant. Then you get a 4 wound monstrous creature that wont be ID by str 8, still keeps synapse, and can seriously fight with the best of them (except when they have power weapons)
want a quick combat unit? Why not instead get raveners or a trygon? Both can either deep strike or outflank (with HC). With raveners specifically, their assault range is 18-24" and can be given rending.
want a cheap unit to throw at the enemy? Why not just buy a squad of 20 gargoyles, since they can score free wounds and have relatively the same speed.
to make matters worse, tyranid shrikes have a worse armor save than their foot-slogging compatriots (Think T-shirt quality armor).
overall, the tyranid shrike seems pretty outclassed. The only viable option is as a moving gun platform, but since warriors can only carry one per brood, a hive tyrant would be better there as well
Pretty much already been stated above. What really pisses me off is that they can be shot off the table with Boltguns - not cool. They stay home for me.
Oh crap, I completely missed the 5+ save. So while the speed help get them into combat sooner, they are more likely to be shot down while not in combat. Not cool.
If you want to run Shrikes its not a bad idea to screen them with naked Gargoyles.
Ah ha! I had my Tyranid codex which doesn't list Fleet as an ability. And of course got the Move and Charge mixed up. Thanks for the clarification.
Though, using a screen of cheap gargoyles does give the unit a 4+ cover save and therefore some sort of survivabilty, it would be best tested via proxy in a few games and then decided upon depending on the players list i think.
