Welcome to Librarium Online!
I was searching through the codex and it seems like the necron do not have any infantry which carry heavy weapons. Even the deathmark snipers are rapid fire weapons. Seriously, what is the point of this upgrade...
It allows units with Rapid Fire weaponry to still fire at full distance and assault even though they shot. Suddenly Immortals with Gauss Blasters, Warriors with Gauss Flayers, and Deathmarks with Synaptic Disintegrators are more mobile and can even finish off a weak unit with an assault.
That seemed like the obvious answer, but I wasn't 100% sure I didn't miss something. I know necrons are tough and durable, but I don't know if I want to be launching assaults with them. I guess it's better to launch the assault then to get assaulted
Yeah, against an Assault-oriented army, you have two choices with Necrons: You either intercept them with your own Assault-oriented units (Lychguard, Praetorians, C'Tan, Flayed Ones, Wraiths, etc.)... or you hit them hard with Rapid Fire and then hope to finish them off with a follow-up assault. The former is preferable, but the latter will do in a pinch. I'd rather assault some Blood Angels that have been softened up with a bunch of shots than let them get the charge off on me.
For the specific wording of the Relentless universal special rule, see page 76 in the rulebook.
Generally I can see a model with phaeron being used in conjunction with immortals more than warriors, simply because the gauss blaster is a better weapon, though as mentioned deathmarks are about the only other unit that really benefits from it - hence why it is such a cheap ability.
I know the wording, it only seems that relentless benefits more from heavy weapons, such as lascannons and heavy bolters. If there were a way to give my devs relentless, I would be doing that every game. Simply put, the gauss blaster option seems like the best way to go.
Seems like kind of a pointless upgrade to me. I mean, are you really going to stick your overlord in a unit of immortals, just for relentless? Or is he going to be hanging out with lychguards for the durability and assault punch?
If it was a Lord upgrade, that would make it worth it. Relentless immortals with an attached res orb lord would be brutal.
I was thinking it was a waste to take a phaeron overlord just to allow immortals to rapid fire and assault. Having an overlord w/ a warscythe chilling in a lychguard unit is definitely scary, let alone a normal lord w/ a warscythe. If the normal lords could get it, I wouldn't hesitate to run it with the immortal unit.
If your not taking any assault units other than wraiths, then this is a fairly nice upgrade to grab cheap and throw into an immortal unit with gauss blasters.
Ye Old Necrons (R.I.P.) (7000pts) W52 D5 L9
New Crons!!! (5000pts) W1 D1 L1
Blood Angels (2500pts) W4 D0 L1
I don't think assaulting anything with your guys is a good Idea. I would pay 20 points to get the old gaus blasters back though...
