Hello everyone. The first game I play with Necrons will be against an extremely skilled guard player. I need some advice on units to take. He doesn't go with the more common lists that most guard players take, finding them to be poorly balanced. His list is a pretty even mix of tanks and infantry, and it can handle pretty much everything. One unit he has used to particularly devastating effect against me is ogryns. He'll attach a commisar to a unit of them and they just steam roll over everything. I know some don't consider ogryns competitive, but I firmly disagree. How do I handle ogryns with Necrons? I'm considering taking the doom scythe, but landing that sucker will be hard, and it won't last long.
Oh, come on. IG have sooo many things to counter Necrons much tougher AND harder to die than a single ogryn Squad. Take a Triarch Stalker and a Ghost ark full with Immortals with Gauss Blasters. Shoot with the Stalker to the Ogryn Squad and then with the Ghost Ark + the Immortals with TL weapons. Mathhammer, it's 15 wounds with no armour save allowed (you see Ogryns are T5 and 3-wounded, but with all this new-necron-codex-gauss-flayer+blaster-spam, they are just easy kill points). 15 wounds = 5 dead Ogryns. And then let his Commisar charge you on his own...muahahaha!!
Generally speaking, at least in theory, new Necrons have lots of things than can do wonders again IG. Wraiths (with 2 wounds, 3+ invu and Rending), scarabs (say goodbye to their tanks), Monoliths (yeah, they still rock! just keep them away from meltaguns :'( ), Warriors (IMO they will always be the biggest strength of our army), Triarch Stalkers (good anti-tank and anti-infantry, the TL speacial rule is just awesome) and, lastly, don't forget the extended Night Vision duration, which comes from Crypteks and Imotekh (and, trust me, this guy is absolutely worth it against IG, Eldar and Dark Eldar, D6 S8 shots will be painful both against their mobility and infantry).
I'm figuring a solar pulse is pretty much mandatory for that critical first turn. I really wish the triarch stalker had a DCCW. It would really help. Wraiths are definitely in. I'm wondering if flayed ones will do the trick...
I agree 100% with this. This is probably the weapon of choice for any mech-spam list you could encounter. Don't worry much about enemy infantry, our anti-infantry capabilities are fantastic. When it comes to tanks we need to get creative though. I'd grab a pair of anni barges and then fill out your fast attack with a couple groups of scarabs a g roup of wraiths. For a third heavy, it's a tough call, cause the monolith isn't safe from melta spam, but I'm still not sold on the doomsday ark either. 175 is a lot to pay for a vehicle that just needs 1 weapon destroyed result to be useless. Monolith could be usefull for hiding your wraiths and scarabs though.IMHO, a Necron Army fighting against IG should have lots of warriors, some Immortals, Imotekh and/or a couple of Solar Pulses (depending on the point level), wraiths, scarabs etc. Anni barges are also a good choice, since they can deal with both tanks and infantry. Theyw ould be perfect if it wasn't the "AP-" which means destroying vehicles only on the 6s of a penetrating hit.
Meanwhile, if you can find points to take both Imotekh and another vanilla overlord, you can take 2 solar pulses, have Imotekh's storm protect you from incoming fire, and then you have a couple options. 1) If your storm ends too early, pop a solar pulse to keep your opponent in nightfight, and 2) If the storm keeps going, pop a solar pulse when you get into range. Guard have a lot of tools for dealing with nightfight (lots of vehicles with spotlights) but you can still keep your enemy from bringing overwhelming firepower to bear on you. Imotekh will also increase your odds of getting first turn. Since IG love having first turn, denying them that can only help you.
The enemy's gate is down
What could be awesome is a particle shredder triarch stalker and some tomb blades with particle weapons - hit as many units as you can with the triarch template then blast away with tomb blade templates, which are now TL. Oh, and if possible a destruction cryptek unit or 2 for solar pulses and long range, TL eldritch lances
