Welcome to Librarium Online!
So here is the deal. Iíve been looking to buy another army for a while, preferably one of the newer ones so that I know it works for 5th and probably 6th edition without too much headache. I can find something to like about most armies since I like the 40k universe so much. I had been going back and forth between DE and GK trying to get something cost effective to play at around 2000 points. When Necrons came out I threw them into the mix. I like Necrons and they would be the best contrast to the army I already play, Orks.
So long story long, I have a ďcanít pass me upĒ deal for dirt cheap Necrons. These are of course old Necrons modes and an old Necron army list here is what Iíll get:
5 flayed ones
1 Necron lord - Destroyer body
1 Necron lord - Normal
3 heavy destroyers
2 monoliths, these are all assemble painted and ready to play, I also get unassemble:
1 flayed one
1 heavy destroyer
1 Necron Lord
Now what to do with it, I have the codex and have been reading various forums. Iím stoked about the 6 wraiths and wish I had more scarabs but oh well. I know the monoliths and destroyers are old hat, hopefully they will lend themselves to 6th edition. The pariahs are my jack of all trades. They will stand in for cryteks, lychguard, or praetorians which ever I decide to use. Flayed ones will probably go the way of the dodo via ebay. So I need a list that plays to the strength of lots of warriors and 2 monoliths probably but any ideas with these models would be appreciated. My second question is in the very, very farfetched event that I might buy something additional to this core army what would you recommend. Might be willing to say splurge for two ghost arcs, but nothing costing more than that.
If you use the Monoliths you don't need the Ghost Arks. Barges, however, are the new big thing. They are INCREDIBLE for their price. Buy two, assemble them but leave the main gun unglued so you can use them as both Annihilation Barges and Catacomb Command Barges as needed.
Revenant Moon Necrons: (W/L/D) 0/1/0 (6th edition: 13/2/2)(5th edition: 14/6/4)(3rd edition Codex: 16/4/7)
XIX Legion: (W/L/D) 0/0/0 (5th edition: 14/12/2)(5th edition Codex: 4/3/0)
Black Legion: (W/L/D) 1/0/0 (6th edition: 2/3/0)
Something Wicked... Reikwald Beastmen: (W/L/D) 10/4/1
I wouldn't go so far as to say that the monoliths make the Ghost Arks obsolete in this list. Yes, the Monolith does to a certain degree replace the Ghost Ark as a transport, but to be quite frank, that is a secondary role for the Ark. I would say that it's primary role is to keep the Warriors Squads at a combat effective squad size by replacing downed warriors. So I wouldn't discount them.
That being said, the Command Barge is pretty sweet, and I think that most people are looking to own at least one if not two of them
I agree about the Command Barges. I was super happy to learn they're being sold as a two-in-one kit. Either unit appears to be very solid for their price (both points and dollars). I disagree about the Ghost Arks though, I think they compliment Monoliths very nicely, especially since they now carry the Lith's old role of repairing Warriors.
Also, I might hold onto those Flayed Ones.. I think they could become very fun in 6e if they retool close combat and the deepstrike rules.
I've recently become a fan of this thing called Dubstep. And you should too.
Datsik & Flux Pavillion - Crunch (Youtube)
Da Moo Kowz is da drinkinest Orks of dem all!
I was just throwing the ghost arcs out there as a for instance, i might be able to throw enough extra money for a new kit or two to liven up the army, if it was needed. I guess I'm mainly wanting to see how more experienced players than myself would field an army out of these models if it were dropped of them.
You have to bear in mind that necrons ARE tooled for 6th edition, so units that might now be pretty lousy, might be ok in 6th (flayed ones)
with that in mind, for 5th ed gaming these are your best bet to use (and you'd need to buy some of the new toys: Ghost Arks and Barges
2 pariahs (count as crypteks?)
1 Necron lord
1 Nightbringer - C'tan is overprised crap, but the modell is pretty nice (you could argue that with Writhing landscape and such its good, but thats an awefull lot of points)
3 heavy destroyers
4 pariahs (count as crypteks)
1 heavy destroyer
1 Necron Lord
I think wraiths and destroyers are abit overprized but might be fun to play with.
Destroyers can also count as Tombblades as there arent any models for them yet!
Buying a Barge is a cheap way of getting a Warscythe Overlord to lead your army, and the barge in Annihilation mode is great.
I'd get 2 ghost arks and 2 Barges.
which gives you 2 overlords too, try 2 of these:
20 warrior blobb
1 Lord with Warscythe, Mindshackle, res orb
1 lord with Warscythe, Mindshackle OR cryptek with Gaze of Flame or Lightning
1 overlord with Warscythe, Mindshackle and phaeron
With a Ghost ark to replenish troops its pretty resilient, you can put a Barge infront of tht ghost ark for cover...
and 2 minimum squads of warriors with crypteks
3 solo heavy destroyers
and a barge or 2
