Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've got some friends into 40K, and though I've been playing Fantasy Battles for years now, never have I even touched 40K. Well, I figure I'll jump in the game a bit, and I just like the idea of Necrons so I bought the codex and I'm looking to build my first army.
I'm looking for a decent list at about 1k points.
Obviously it has to be noob friendly if possible since this will likely be my first game ever. So I'm just curious what you guys might suggest, and why, and maybe some quick tactical advice with whatever lists you all can think of.
The theme of necrons is they don't die. i tried this unit yesterday and even with 500 points of models shooting it every turn, it still survived.
Lord with ResOrb&Hyperphase sword&mindshackle scarabs.
Overlord with Phaeron&Hyperphase Sword.
would be so much better if you have 1-2 ghost arcs supporting it. i played 1000 points s i didn't have room for my ghost arcs, but in 1500 i would add 2 squads of 9 warriors & Cryptek with HoDestruction&solar pulse in ghost arcs. and your second overlord would have a warscythe in a CCB, or you could use any of the named characters with phaeron.
I would start at 500pts instead of 1k since your new get used to the rules of 40k and your army with the small points, then build from there. Here is a list im working on at 500pts it gives a few units to get used too including a skimmer.
Necron Overlord 140pts
+ Cryptek HoD
10 Necron Immortals 170pts
+ Gauss Blasters
5 Necron Warriors 65pts
Annihilation Barge 90pts
+ Gauss Cannon
Overlord goes with the big Immortals squad and the cryptek goes with the small warrior squad.
As was said, they are fairly resilient with T4 and a 4+ with the reanimation protocols on top of that. Just remember that if you entire unit is wiped out or you fall back you don't get a chance to use the RP rolls. A common stategy for opponents will be to completely wipe out one unit at a time so they don't get a chance to stand back up.
I guess if you're looking for a good place to start:
Overlord - Warscythe, Phaeron, Res Orb
Royal Court - x3 Harbingers of Destructon (x1 Solar Pulse)
x15 Warriors (Overlord and Cryptek go here)
x5 Warriors - Ghost Ark (Cyptek goes here)
x5 Warriors - Ghost Ark (Cryptek goes here)
Of course this is only one build out of soooooo many options. The 5-man squads stay in the Arks as bunkers for the Crypteks and take shots at transports/targets of opportunity.
Ghost Arks both stay in range of the 15-man squad so they can repair Necrons (make sure to park them at an angle so they can get gauss shots off from the broadside. They can also manuever around to block the enemy from assaulting your giant mob and barges as well as zoom out to grab objectives.
Overlord gives the 15-man squad a 4++, Relentless, and some defense against CC. Crypek in there can help gunning down light vehicles.
Annihilation Barges can gun for light vehicles or infantry.
You could probably swap out the Cryptek in the large squad for a Harbinger of Transmorgification......but I'd rather have the extra high-strength shot. It'll be very valuable early in the game.
Of course you can try a whole bunch of different things with that. Just one example of a list that might work.

I'd honestly suggest 750 - 1000 as a starting point for a solid army once you've made your choice and gotten a several demo/proxy games in.
Sorry I should have clarified what I meant.Yeah. I try to avoid GW stores like the plague.Walk into any games workshop and say your new to the game and they will tell you to start at 500pts or even lower.
I'd suggest proxying a few games before buying anything, as has been said before, the last thing you want to do is buy a bunch of models and hate them. The only models I'd say are pretty much a must buy are a couple of Annihilation Barges. The best part about them is not only do you get to choose to build the Annihilation Barge or Catacomb Command Barge (which is another amazing vehicle) but if you do build the Annihilation Barge, it gives you the bits to build a Necron Overlord seperate, allowing you to save money.
World Eaters: W-47 D-10 L-9
Necrons: W-19 D-3 L-2
Protectorate of Menoth: W-36 D-0 L-7
I suggest following:
Catacomb Command Barge
10 Immortals w/Tesla carbines
This gives you a solid core of troops, very good fire support and the utter coolness and fun of Command Barge while it also leaves you with 95 points which you can use to outfit your Overlord, get a few Crypteks or anything else you might fancy.
