So, I decided to put my feelings aside for a couple games this past weekend and give my old destroyers another shot at redemption.
They fell short, very short! And not to my surprise. They survived the entire game until the final turn but for a shooting platform they accomplished next to nothing. I was using full units of 5 with 2 Heavy cannons and for 240 points, as a whole they were useless. What really did them in was the lack of range on the Gauss cannons, the 24" is just far to much of a cut to consider worth while. Also having only 2 shots VS the original 3 just reduces the killing potential far to much.
Side Note: Not having a rule book handy we couldn't remember if jump infantry Could move and shoot heavy weapons so we assumed not for the purpose of the game.
The advantage the destroyers once had is now gone, and that was the ability to actively avoid any and every conflict while still laying down impressive fire power. They were neither under priced nor over powered, they were a balanced unit that demanded a tactically aware commander and in return gave you everything you could ask for from a rather fragile shooting unit.
Although there is an advantage in being able to take Heavy Gauss with the unit instead of having to run 2 separate units, it's really the only thing you would waNt out of it. But what's the point when you can Slap destruction Crypteks in any unit with a gun that's almost identical but still let's you move and shoot. Plus it's cheaper and doesn't take up a fast slot.
I will admit however that Granting heavy destroyers tank hunters from Zhandrek was successful and seriously fun. But as whole, until I see a change in Prefered enemy in 6th edition it's just not worth the points, and definitely not worth the Slot.

You are right that jump infantry cannot move and shoot with heavy weapons, but the heavy gauss cannon is an assault weapon, despite the name. So you can still move and shoot with the weapon. Maybe that will make them a little better. Also, I would think that heavy destroyers are better separate from normal destroyers, as they have different roles (anti-tank vs anti-MEQ).
Huh, I totally missed that. Guess I assumed they were still heavy and never bothered to look twice. Still that only makes them slightly better and in my opinion still not worth the points
No, jump infantry do not have relentless like the old Destroyers did as jetbike units. But luckily that doesn't slow them down any, as the Gauss Cannon and Heavy Gauss Cannon are both assault weapons ^-^
EDIT: I was beaten to the punch! Was already posted while I was typing... I blame the telephone...
