I've been looking at the two profiles for Annihilation Barges and have been wondering how best to load them out. Either design utilizes the twin-linked Tesla Destructor -- the Annihilation Barge's primary weapon, and that leaves the Barge with only one upgrade option: Tesla Cannon or Gauss Cannon?
A quick breakdown of the implications of either choice...
+ They both the same range and number of shots.
+ Neither are defensive weapons
+ Strength 6
+ + Can penetrate AV 10 and 11 (most transports), and glance AV 12
+ + Wounds T4 or less on 2+, can wound T5 on 3+
+ Tesla grants you a 33% chance to inflict at least 2 additional hits each round of firing
+ AP --
+ + -1 on vehicle damage table on penetrating hits, -3 on glancing hits
+ + Does not ignore armor saves; by comparison making the extra 16% chance to wound MEQ less significant due to 66% chance of passing armour saves, but still more effective against TEQ.
+ Cannot touch AV 13 or 14 (though Tesla Destructor can still glance AV 13)
+ TL Tesla Destructor makes ability to penetrate AV 11 less relevant
+ AP 3
+ + Ignores MEQ armor saves but less effective against TEQ.
+ + Does not confer additional -1 on vehicular damage table rolls
+ Gauss allows glancing hits on AV 11+ on roll of '6'; allows Barge to glance AV 14 in desperation.
+ Str 5
+ + Still very good for hurting infantry, just 16% less likely to wound than Tesla; made less significant by ignoring 3+ armor saves.
+ + Cannot penetrate AV 11 (Rhinos)
Those are just a few things I could think of off the top of my head. I'm really leaning towards replacing the Tesla Cannons with Gauss Cannons to compliment the Destructor's shortcomings (primarily by providing AP 3 shots). Being that we will likely want to remain mobile rather than sit and shoot all weapons, I suspect the Destructor will be firing often, and either Cannon only a few times. But having the option to pour more anti-MEQ shots into a unit too seems more appealing to me than +1 Str and a 16% chance for either shot to confer an additional 2 hits.
EDIT: I decided to do a little bit of mathhammering after posting, comparing average casualties inflicted per round of firing with Gauss and Tesla Cannons vs. MEQ.
Gauss Cannon MEQ: Causes 0.8889 casualties per round.
Tesla Cannon MEQ (accounting for Tesla): Causes 0.556 casualties per round.
Conclusion: Gauss causes ~50% more casualties versus MEQ than Tesla, even when accounting for the +2 hits inflicted on a to hit roll of '6'

The ability to glance AV12 without AP- makes gauss the winner of the already. Its actually better against AV12 as a result and extremely close against AV11 (again due to no AP-). The only advantage of tesla is that its better against non-MEQ infantry. And with how common cover-saves are nowadays that can make the AP3 of the gauss cannon next to useless.
Its a close call, which is probably why they cost the same points. The problem is that gauss although better at killing MEQ's, is worse at dealing with their AV11 transports. While Tesla is the reverse... but against anything else (chimera equiv transports) then gauss is going to be better Vs the transports (AV10/AV12) and worse V the infantry... again tesla being the opposite.
Personally though, I think MEQ's are not our problem, transports and TEQs are. So I'm going to go with tesla simply because it is better suited against targets we have problems against.

I still haven't played any of my lists yet, but I might be getting a game or three in tomorrow night. So my experience on the matter is a significant part of my indecision. Whether the Barge is more often doing the scoot-and-shoot or sitting still to fire for full effect will have an impact on my decision; however, I'm not quite sure which would lead me to which conclusion yet. Again, experience would have to determine that. If we're sitting still, that means we're likely handling transports well enough, though that may be largely due to the Tesla's slightly enhanced ability to stunlock.
I go tesla all the way. Against transports the main weapon with its S7 is far better than S5 Gauss, so the underslung weapon is just to bring more firepower against infantry... Which usually can get the 4++ cover save, so ability to wound marines on 2's and create additional hits comes out on top.

Gauss all the way. AP3 is a great thing to have as MOST (yes most) armies are marines. Cover or not, negating the 3+ save is huge when it comes down to it. I use my S7 weapon all the time, but in some circumstances all I do is pivot (as long as out of assault range) and blast a squad of marines with some AP3 goodness thrown in. Having the versatility is huge. I'm not a fan of AP-. The main gun is the only exception for it in my case.

I would go neither way. Magnetizing the weapon is the wisest choice IMO.
As for their effectiveness, it depends on the role you want the Anni Barge to fulfill. If you want it for poping transports, go for the Tesla Cannon, as 2 BS4 Tesla S6 shots are going to help a lot. Yeah, it's AP- but penetrating AV11 on the 6s with AP- is better than glancing it on the 6s with no -1 penalty. If you want it as an infantry killer, take the Gauss. AP3 is not only for MEQ, but also for MCs (0.5 wounds allocated on a Trygon/Carnifex isn't bad at all). Lastly, don't forget that the Tesla cannon causes instant death to 2-wounded IG platforms.
So, yeah, it all depends on the army you're facing. Against Nids, CSM, GKs, BA etc., I'd take the gauss. Against Orks, IG, Dark Eldar etc., I'd take the Tesla.
Hope I helped.

...huh. I always figured I'd take the tesla, since it's almost the same as the main gun, and you'll be shooting it at the same target. Last time I played marines, he didn't field a single model with a 3+ save... grrr. Honestly I kind of like high AP weapons because they let me shoot through cover without penalty. So if for nothing else than to keep the model focused, I'd take the tesla.
I've always figured annibarges are mainly anti infantry so Tesla, as the potential for extra shots rocks. Now if I'm ever in a situation to fire my overbarge, gauss all the way as ill either be killing tanks or trying to snipe pf sergeants anyhoo.
I take my annihilation barges for the destructor. While the gauss is a good compliment for it, I generally use my destro.crypteks to do the things that my destructor can't do. I'm wanting my annihilation barge for massive amounts of wounds. If I wanted AP, I would have picked up a doomsday barge instead. Tesla for me, all the way.
