Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have been looking though the fourms and I have found very little on ripper swarms. For only a few points they have 3 wounds and 4 attacks which to me seems very useful. I was curious about:
Are they Useful?
How many do you use?
Are the upgrades worth it?
I may end up throwing some in my 1000 point if they are useful.
No. They cannot hold objectives, they die quickly to instant death, they have low toughness and initiative which negates their high number of attacks, they are worse against high strength and template weapons than our other choices, their low weapon skill makes them easy to kill so they get wiped out in combat or die to fearless so they can't even tarpit the enemy.
Zero. They use a troops place which can be used for gaunts, Hormigaunts, Genestealers, and Tervigons. I never have an extra troops slot. Even in 1000 points, it is hard for me not to fill my troops slots, and would much rather add 5 hormigaunts than the minimum squad of a troops choice that cant hold an objective.
No. A Ripper is close to worthless, and paying more for it does not make it ok. Paying for spinefists on a WS2 unit is horrible, Paying for extra close combat prowess on a unit that is supposed to tarpit the enemy is wrong. Paying points for a unit to deepstrike when it takes wounds for being outside of synapse range is a poor choice.
Don't forget that if they get out of Synapse range for any reason they're just plain toast. Just one more thing to add to the suckage.
What everybody else said. You can't afford to waste points on them.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.
