When are Lychgaurd cost effective? I'm sure there better against certain armies or lists, so which ones do you guys think?
I ask cuz i was thinking, maybe in the future, of buying a 5 man squad of lychgaurd with warsythes to help combat choas marines. Last week a squad of Bezerkers poured down an hill and mowed through a unit of warroirs before sending my Tazryn to E.R. and he had lychgaurds with shields as a bodygaurd. After that i was wondering if it would be different with warsyche lychgaurd
I think Lychgaurd with shields are good for protecting special characters
Lychgaurd with warsyches would be good against Marines and Eldar.
What do you guys think?
Lychguard with Warscythes wouldn't have saved you. Both the Hyperphase Sword and Warscythe are power weapons. You only really gain the +2 to Str, but Lychguard are already Str 5, so you only change wounding from 3 to a 2.
I typically put Vargard Obyron in with a squad of Lychguard with Swords and Shields. That way I can 'port them around and I primarily drop between my army and enemy assaulters that get too close or to help with an ongoing assault. The other bonus is that the Lychguard shores up Obyron's lack of an invul save. One of my favorite things is to drop him near enemy lines and watch as my opponent pours fire into them to avoid being assaulted, then watching all those high str shots go bouncing back into his lines.
But to be honest, I don't run them unless I have the clear advantage in assault. Namely, where my WS, Str or Toughness are better than theirs. I find their cost too prohibitive to field en masse, unless you're running a Trazyn list. At best they are a protective unit, primarily defensive.
I'm not sure if there's ever a time where warscythe lychguard are worth their points, at least, so long as we're in 5th ed. While they're great for anti-tank and anti-monstrous creatures, they just can't quite do either. Tanks will outrun them, and MC's will most likely hit first and outfight them due to bypassing armour. But you still have the issue of them surviving long enough to get there. They do fine against basic squads, but that buried power fist is going to really do a number on them, and you're really hoping you can do enough damage with them to earn their points back. Considering how difficult they are to use (again, due to immobility), "hoping" that your 200 point cc squad earns its points back against a 200 point troop squad is pretty poor.
The greatest competition warscythe guard have (beyond wraiths) is amongst their sword/shield counterparts. For 25 points more, they gain an invulnerable save (which is crucial to survive shooting, other power weapons, etc) and all they really lose out on is the bonus strength (but do you really feel confident with your guard taking on a demon prince that's half their points?) and the armour pen (again, issues with catching up). And really, how many warscythes do you need to get the job done? Usually, one is plenty. And that's an option if you do want to take on vehicles and mc's. Beating on a rhino, 5 warscythes is generally overkill and unnecessary.
Do I think they're viable and you can make them work? Sure. Do I think they're worth their points? Not compared to their sword/shield counterparts.
Lychguard have two problems:
1) Sword and Shield is 5 points overpriced, IMO
2) You have to change the equipment of ALL models in single unit.
If you could get 5 Lychguard with, say, 3 Shields and 2 Warscythes on 200 points it would be golden. These would be our Assault Termies. Now your only real choise is to get 5+ Sword & Shield dudes and attach a Lord from court. But the cost is 300 points, which is really a bit too steep.
The most effective use for Lychguards is, at the moment, a true Deathstar. 10 dudes with sword & shield, Lord with scythe and orb. Maybe even Overlord with scythe. But that comes to minimum of 500 points.

Thank you guys for the responses. You guys really put things into perspective. I won't Buy another box of lychgaurd unless 6th edition changes them. And i think i'll stick my vangaurd dude in there once i finish the conversion.

I haven't had much luck with the Lychguard with shields. They just cost too much IMO period. In the five games I've used them, they have never gotten their points back and 4 of the 5 games, they ran and were swept complete with their Lord and court members present. Hundreds of points, just gone.
Until the rules change, Lychguard and Praetorians are massively overpriced and mostly useless. Sad, but true. The only thing we can take heart in, is why would GW make a kit of two units that most players would never use? I think a lot of the new Necron stuff is made with new rules in mind...
