Welcome to Librarium Online!
I see so many list based around warriors and I seem to be having a lot of luck with immortals but i recognize I am new and maybe I am missing something.
but for 4 points you get +1 to saves=16.66% more survivable
+one weapon str= in most cases another 17% to wound
Lower AP by one opens up kills to a lot of basic troops.
And personally I have found a lot of luck with the immortals tesla
Tesla Chance to hit = 66.66% Chance to gain 2 additional attacks = 16.66%(which in theory adds another 33% to hit) thus with 10 immortals on average I am hitting 10 times with str 5 most cases wounding on a 3+ or 4+ so causing 5-6 wounds.
Secondly you can shoot at 24" without worrying about movement as tesla are assult weapons where as gauss you have to be still or get in closer.
I know warriors have some nice synergy with some of the vehicles and maybe thats why so many are taken but I feel you get a much larger advantage then the 25% more points you spend for them correct me if im wrong, still learning.
also if you have stalker odds are you will get about 13 attacks per 10 immortals
I think a lot of it is that people don't put a lot of emphasis on their troops, instead using other slots, which tend to be more killy, to be the backbone of their army. So a cheaper troop looks like a better option, especially if it's as resilient as a space marine.
To lend further support to Klajorne's post, there are a lot of shiny toys in our 'dex, like Wraiths, Scarab/Spyder farms, Barges (both varieties), and Crypteks. All of which are so cool, the tendency will be to shove as many of them into a list as possible. There's also the cost->effect of purchasing Warriors ($$) for starting new army lists. They, as well as Barges, are arguibly the most bang for the buck when starting a new list.
I think when the new car smell wears off, people will find a more balanced approach to list design. With Immortals being upgraded to Troops (if you're unfamiliar, they used to be Elites), I could easily see a mixed troop selection of 1 Immortals, 2 Warriors, and Ghost Ark support being the normal core of a balanced list. Granted, there will always be spam and gimmick lists. I know I personally love to spam.. but that's just a neurotic quirk I've acquired over years of playing games.. even in M:tG I am loath to run just 1 of a card in a deck, I guess I just really like symmetry. But that's neither here nor there, I think both units will have their place in most lists in the long run.
All these and the fact that Immortals die exactly in the same way as warriors do by Plasma weaponry, Battle Cannons, Demolishers etc., which are the best shooting counters to Necrons. What is more, 10 Immortals (costing 170 points) firing Gauss Rapid Fire against, let's say, MEQ cause an average of 3 casualties. 13 Warriors (costing 169 pts) also cause an average of 3 dead MEQs if firing at rapid fire. That fact is making Immortals=Warriors regarding their Gauss firepower, while in CC Warriors are better (more models=more attacks=more kills). Last but not least, all of us used to have 40+ Necron Warriors with the old Codex (I own 60 ), so it's obvious why everyone is using them
plus Immortals with a 3+ save vs 4+ has worked well esp against other shooty armies. And with more individual survivability makes reanimation proto that much more effective.
i can see immortals being more defencive than warriors, as i would prefer to march across the board with warriors with a ghost ark in support as they are cheaper and can be repaired by the ghost ark as they will take more fire but are more resiliant than what a squad of immortals would be.
so in time i can see people taking at least 1 of each squad (for the 2 troop choice) and bigger games more warriors
and if you give the immortals anaryka's upgrade and szera's upgrade they are even better at def with counter attack/furious charge and either bs5,st5,t5. which i cna see a thron in any 1's side (st6 on the charge hell yer or t5 when being chagred with counter attack) add a storm cryp thats 1 tough unit to crack (just wish szera unlocked royal courts)
The art of war is simple enough. Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can. Strike him as hard as you can, and keep moving.
I also think that warriors are being picked up a lot cause of the niffty inclusion of scarabs in thier boxset in all seriousness its probably cause ATM the elite choices are expensive for what they do in 5th so the troop heavy list are kinda rocking right now and it works cause the mid range shootyness of necrons is powerfull. As a possible derailment of thread; if 6th gives our CC elites more oomph we will probably see even more royal court/lychguard list with minimum warior support.
