Ok, so I was laying in bed, fantasizing about my dream tyranid swarm (yeah, instead of a girl, who's a nerd? *raises hand*) and was reading the codex. It seems to me, that with the statistics of the deathspitter, combined with the stats of the Carnifex, that it'd make a much better vehicle destroyer, since it, unlike the VC, can achieve more than just a glancing hit. The only downside would be the lack of range for the DS vs the VC. Has anyone used it and had success? Also, since the DS uses a blast template, do you roll to scatter when you hit a vehicle? From what I got of the 4th ed rules, which state "all hits are assumed to be taken on the armor from the direction of the shot" then it doesn't scatter, and the hole would be over the vehicle, which means that the strength of the shot wouldn't be halved...or am I mistaken?
"Can you put that in a memo and title it '***** I already know!'"
Church: "Ok, so we're agreed? You first!"
Sarge: "Get on with it, Griff."
Griff: "I'd just like everyone to know: that I suck."
Griff: "And that I'm a girl..."
Church: "What else?"
Griff: "And I like ribbons in my hair, and I want to kiss all the boys."
Sarge: "This has to be the best surrender of all time."
That is a really good idea, and it won't scatter. I might use it for its tank hunting ability, but that is probably better elsewhere. And it isn't too much of a troop killer, because of the small blast. I probably won't use it. If you want to hunt tanks, use it, but if you want to kill infantry, that is better off with the barbed strangler.
Blast weapons dont scatter, and you still need to roll to hit with them. If you miss then you miss just like any other shot. Which is why Deathspitters suck because you only get one shot with them. Two on a Carnifex you would get two shots and his ballistic skill of three means he misses 50% of the time. So you can run halfway across the board to miss twice. If you intend to get close and want to be sure of destroying the vehicle then get two Devourers. With those you get eight shots, much more chance to hit and destroy your target.
Venom Cannon is still preferable IMO. Remember glancing hits can still destroy vehicles, shooting a glancing hit once and rolling a six is not impossible. Also remember that if you blow up all the vehicles S4+ weapons and immobilize it then its destroyed automatically. Even if neither of those things happen any of the other results can still hurt your enemy and tip the battle in your favor.
Thought about it, but the carnifex is usually busy with VC's. I need him to take down tanks at long range. If he isn't there I have very little that can reliably stop tanks. Even with two DS, he could very well miss both shots. And also he needs to be much closer, which by that time the need to take tanks down is low. (I am already eating Ordinance and lasconnons)
Agreed with Slaveunit, if you want close reliable firepower take dual devourers. Good for seeding swarm.
Personally, I can't wait to see what changes to our weapons they make in the new codex.
I know GW realizes that the BS sucks. Everyone takes VCs because of that fact. So they know they need to ramp up everything to make the other weapons useful again.
Since the current census is that they are removing the "glancing only' effect of the VC, that means it is being improved. If that is indeed the case, I can only imagine the rest of the weapons are being dealt with as well. [crosses fingers]
I want to wait to make any serious model conversions or buy any carnifex models until the new stuff comes out.
