Welcome to Librarium Online!
So a while back I'd basically stripped bright lances out of my army. They were expensive, I was taking dragons and prisms anyway, and necrons and some space marines ignored their speciel effect on AV14 vehicles so those would make for really bad match ups.
However I think those rules are now gone. Brightlances work on everything right?
Also, there is ever more AV13-14 stuff out there, and opposing forces are getting better at whacking fire dragons, both from a new codex and metagame standpoint.
So I was thinking about maybe doing a weapon swap and lancing up my serpents, maybe freeing me up to go with night spinners instead of prisms.
The thing holding me back is cost, I'd essentially have to drop a DAVU serpent, or something of equivalent cost, just the put lances on five others.
What do you guys think about the weapon in general these days?
I believe one Space Marine faction still has the anti-lance but not many things do have them. Necrons no longer ignore the lance and it would actually be benefical against their new shield that make their tanks AV13 until a penetrating hit is scored on them.
I think a couple of lance weapons could be benefical but I don't think yu need to swap out all of them. 2 or 3 lances will be sufficent to take down most things and then they will become target prioity if they are a major threat to your opponent allowed your other stuff safe passage to get to where they need to be.
I generally have 2 or 3 in my army. I see land raiders and vindicators quite often, and their a big help with those. I haven't fought Cron's with my Eldar yet, but I'm looking forward to the first time I drop a Monoliths armor to 12.
And Black Templars still have the Blessed Hull on their land raiders.

Is 2-3 really enough though? Me and other DE players frequently follow a 1 per 100 points rule of thumb with lances, and whilst admittedly you have easier access to meltas, the point still stands that 3 lances for long range fire isn't going to do anything of merit without insane luck.

Darklances for Dark Eldar are cheaper and easier to come by. They're really expensive for Eldar, it's on of a few reasons most don't like to take them.
In most cases a brightlance is not needed, but are useful when the occassion arises.
If you are just trying to get more brightlances in your army, why not get a squad of 10 guardsmen and then a brightlance. That is only around 120pts.
Army's used: Space Wolves, Tomb Kings, High Elves, Tyranids, Tau and Eldar.
The issue with guardians is that they tend to miss a bunch, and then run off the table as soon as a space marine looks at them with a mean expression.
But we all have serpents anyway right? So it'd be easy to throw BLs on a few. Maybe the DAVU ones in order to draw fire off of the serpents with the fire dragons.
