anti tank (taking a rupture cannon)
anti horde ( not taking a rupture cannon)
not taking a tyranofex
i think that the only way to run them is anti horde becuase other wise i think they are useless, trying to win the ranged game when they are facing a predator which is simply cheaper and better, not to mention dark eldar.
i do think they are overpriced and i dont take them, but maybe in the future
Option 1: 250pts for a less powerful SM predator (with shorter range and BS 3!).
Option 2: 250pts for a slow hellhound... or 250pts for 20 termagant shots...
Option 3: 5 hiveguard or biovores to cover (more effectively) either of the above mentioned roles.
The above comparisons do not factor that he is arguably tougher than the above alternatives (excepting hive guard) to his defense. The problem is a confusion of roles. The points you pay for survive-ability just don't pan out.
As the only strength 10 aside from warp lance available at range in this army - I would take him only for a niche role (maybe even then I wouldn't). I wish they had kept biomass points on these guys (they are basically heirodules) for the same cost - then we can talk about em. Or at least twin-linked!

they are good anti tank and all but for the point cost they are just not worth it as well as the fact that they are horrible to convert
One of the main problems is that it is to easy to tie up, the enemy would probably throw away some of there army to stop it shooting
Another problem is that for the points cost they have no invunrable save meaning if it gets caught with a power claw within a few turns it is dead
so for the points cost there just not worth it, it would be better to spend more points on the tyranid elite slot as tyranids have some of the best elites out there
Rupture Cannon is the only way to go. Tyranids suck at anti-vehicle and aside from easily killed zoans, this is the highest strength gun we have. A competitive tyranid list almost always needs one or two of these.
While I agree that Tyrannofexes are over-priced, considering that MC's average 170 pts base, it's not that bad.
2+ save, long range anti-tank and the ability to fire 3 guns. Nids need all the anti-tank they can get. So for the pts you get that and another MC in one nice package that's alot more viable than the other Heavy Support options save a Carnifex brood, which is more expensive.
Not a waste of points when it takes out a 260 point Land Raider with two shots. Not a waste of points when it then goes on to take out a Stormraven as well, with plenty of wounds to spare.
Every game it has served me well. Perhaps you are not using it to its fullest potential?
I still think that 2 shots of str 10 and cover for the rest of the big Nids is worth the points, and a big chunk of the enemy is going to shoot him and not your other big guns
and insta killing 2 marines/crons/other elites is pretty usefull and he can also shoot hes other 2 templates making havoc vs hordes as well!
