i was sitting in my dorm yesterday thinking about war walkers with mixed weapon options like
- 3 walkers 2 with scatter laser EML and one with dual scatter lasers
What are your guys thoughts about configurations like this one? effective?
I'd personally find it a little odd, especially with BS 3. Those missile launchers will have punch when they hit, but they won't be hitting all that often.
I'd stick with Shuriken cannons all round. Lots of S6 loveliness and plenty of shooting whilst being dirt cheap for what they do.
The thing with mixed weapons is, the squad has to fire at one target. So if you're using those EML's on a high armored target, then the scatter lasers are getting wasted. Eldar can't afford to waste points. Most things in the current book cost too much so you need to balance the list most times. Eldar excel at having one unit do a task very well. They get in to trouble when you try to make multi-purpose units.
If you maybe had 2 squads of 2, making 1 all scatters and one all EML then you might have something, but that EML squad is gonna be pretty unreliable with the BS 3 as SILKiam was saying. There's better anti-tank in the army. Walkers should be infantry obliterators.
Something I'm considering in my current Walker loadout was 2 with all 2 SL's each and one with 2 starcannons for a little extra punch. Haven't tried it yet.
The problem is that every unit in the game is an infantry obliterator. Aside from perhaps the Wrathguard.Walkers should be infantry obliterators.
I think that 2 Missle Launchers is the way to go for war walkers. Especially if you are taking 2 or more.
Army's used: Space Wolves, Tomb Kings, High Elves, Tyranids, Tau and Eldar.
the EML's could always go small blast if im taking on infantry, and if im gonig for av 12 i can at least guarantee a glancing result(unless im rly unlucky). the fact that everything in our army focusses on specialization is actually our downfall in this meta game, because everyone knows what to hit (fire dragons work well against tanks and i run an army of vehicles im gonig to kill those first) but i understand your meaning i always figured that scatter lasers were used as more of a rhino/razorback counter than anything else. In my War walker list i plan on using 6 war walkers and guiding them as much as possible.
I don't own walkers.
But when I was pondering getting them, I thought of having a cheap shuri cannon "whipping boy" walker as an escort for two expensive walkers.
If I understand the squadron rules right hey could spend the game completely hidden to help the squad get cover saves(so it doesn't really matter what their weapons are anyway) , but somehow they always end up taking those railgun hits.
In contact with regularly equiped expensive walkers you'd be tempted to have them all able to draw LOS, and thus likely not get a save, and after the first ones dead you've got the same fairpower as the whipping boy squadron.
I prefer scatter lasers over shuricannons because you get more range and more shots, and it is worth the points.
I run either all EML or all Scatter laser. In my current list I have 2 squads of 2, one squad with EML and the other with scatter laser.
The crucial advantage of the EML is the 48" range, this males it a lot easier to keep your walkers out of trouble.
For the unreliable thing, having two EMLs is equivalent to having one that is twin linked reliability-wise. When you weigh your attack on a single die, that's unreliable, not having BS3 in general. Only that one-shot BS 3 attacks feel a lot more unreliable than BS4. The important thing is that no unit in an army exists in a vacuum, should one unit miss there should be other units to fall back on.
Warhammer Fantasy: Warriors of Chaos, High Elves
Warhammer 40k: Eldar, Space Marines, Orks
What about using a single walker as a mobile missile platform? I was trying to squeeze in some anti-vehicle power into my list and was considering just buying a cheap guardian squad for the EML. But to get it I would need to get at least 10 guardians @ 8 pts each, + the EML upgrade. One walker w dual EMLs is 70 pts. Sit it in the back and take pot shots; still BS3 but two shots, right? Not sure whats better.
