Welcome to Librarium Online!
I was just wondering if anyone else used any carnefexes other than the dakka-fex (2 sets of TL brainleech devourers only) in spore. If so, what do you use. I often use a screamer killer that just refuses to die and almost always cuts a bloody swath through my opponent. I also like to use a brood of 2 (in games of 1850+) armed with stranglethorn cannons, and a set of TL devourers.
Generally not. I find they're too slow to be of any real use. Hence the use of a Spore. Sometimes I chuck them in a Spore with Bio-Plasma and two sets of Scything Talons but my opponents aren't generally dumb enough to let me charge a Carnifex into their Land Raider.
The only time I run Carnifexes is when I run the Parasite of Mortrex. Two Carnifexs, add the Parasite and a Warrior Prime with twin Boneswords.
Basically use the Carnifexes for majority toughness and to absorb incoming shots, long enough to get both the Parasite and the Warrior Prime into combat.
But other than that....never.
They still have a use, it's just a general pain (depending on opinion) to fit them into a list because of the amount you need to build around the big boy walking theme. from what I've seen and heard HVC spam with fex's and such hiding and walking in a Vthrope, gant bubble seems to be a fairly good place, other than that there rather quite lacking in a "useful" role to fulfill.
Dakkafex in a spore is definitely my favorite way to use these guys.
I am not averse to running a dakkafex -- or fex with devourers and HVC -- on foot, either.
I will occasionally run a unit of two bare bones, just dual scything talons, for s__ts and giggles. Every now and then they actually cause a lot of damage!
In any case, every single Tyranid army list I run includes at least one Carnifex. And 9 out of 10 of them include 2 Carnifexes. Love these guys!
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

I don't play competitively, but yes I use 'fexes, normal ones with Heavy Venom cannons and Scything talons. Sure they're slow, but you just have to help them get there, then they can be pain on legs to armour. And even Dreadnoughts are going to have a tough time in combat, just don't use them alone, it's not worth it anymore, they have to be in groups, I may even buy another so I can put three as a single Heavy slot. Three Venom cannons if they can get in range is going to hurt a tank. And don't even go there if the 'fex's get into CC with it.
Just my opinion, but I kinda don't like the heavy venom cannon anymore. Has anyone made good use of them? And 3 carnies with just HVC'x in a single brood just seems kinda expensive for what it does, I think I would rather use a tyrannofex with regen.
Nope, except on Harpy and ocassionally on Tyrants, but mostly Stranglethorn nowadays.Originally Posted by paladin777
But again it's all perspective, all I see is people playing 'to win' instead of playing as I do for fun, it's one reason I don't like tourneys, everyone gets too riled up and must win attitudes, I lose a lot, whatever army I play, maybe it's cos I don't just stick to one army, maybe it's luck (I do seem to suffer with dice rolls), maybe it's a mix of many things. I don't care, as long as:
a)I Enjoy the game
b) I have an army that looks the part (that is to say the way it's meant to look)
c) my opponent enjoys the game
Then win or lose is irrelevent, I'd far rather field a well painted army that gets comments on the paint job, and/or the overall effective appearence than one that looks crap but always wins.
So yes I field Carnifexes, one because I had them anyway, 2 because I like them, they still conjure up an image of pure brutality, and thirdly because they do have a use, not much anymore but hey while my opponent is shooting them he's not shooting something else.
