When I first started playing nids at the age of 14 or so, my only tactic was "Run directly toward the enemy and get them in close combat". Thankfully the people I played with were about as smart, and this strategy worked more often than it should have. Now i'm 10 years older, and have just started getting interested in 40k again.
With a more mature mind I can see things I never even would have considered back then, and im wondering what unusual tactics ddo other nid players use? Do many of you use the old "swarm them with hormagaunts" tactic, or do you use big shooty nids? How do you use your swarms?
I have personally fallen in love with Mawlocs, and am building my army based around taking out enemy HQ and valuable units as soon as they enter the battlefield with the aid of three deep striking mawlocs, a bunch of lictors and deathleaper.
How I play depends who I'm against, and the list I make varies on my mood.
If you're using 3 Mawlocs, you need 6 Hive Guard, 2 Zoeys in a Spore, and a Harpy with TL HVCs to satisfy any anti-tank you require.
3 Mawlocs can be devastating. Just don't DS them! Deploy them normally turn one, burrow them, then they're guaranteed to arrive Turn 2.
Unless you are playing tank-heavy armies, the tactic of "hurry up and get everything into Assault" still works best. Tyranids have some of the best assault troops in the game, but they lack 1) transports to get them into assault, and 2) great armor / invuln saves to survive shooting.
Against mech (tanks), you'll need Hive Guard and Zoans to pop open the crunchy shell before you can get to the cream filling.
Took longer than expected to return. Mawlocs have the potential to take out vehicles, since the blast always hits on the rear armor, but I know my freakish luck has to run out eventually. Im thinking harpy and zoey broods for anti tank, since both will fit the theme and still get the job done. And yes, getting into combat as quick as possible is still a good tactic, the question is how to get them there without being torn to shreds by the high tech weaponry of our delicious foes. Thankfully we have plenty of troops with deep strike or speedy movement.
Just wanted to ask a question without making another thread, since it will fit quite well here;
Lately I have been using Old One Eye, escorted by a trio of warriors with lash whips & boneswords so he can strike at the same time as pretty much anything and screened by a large brood of shooty warriors who conveniently step aside to let him and his followers assault. But I was wondering, is it worth getting rid of the lash whip warriors (or using them somewhere else) and replacing them with Venomthropes? Vthropes have lower weapon skill, lack synapse and cost a bit more, but is their awesome 2+ toxic touch and, more importantly, the cover save they'll give both Old One Eye and the shooty warrior screen worth it?
Im leaning towards yes, but just wanted another nid players opinion before spending 110 points and 82 bucks on a pair of models I might not use.
Every suit of power armor should have a ring pull to save valuable tyranid time.
