Welcome to Librarium Online!
I just purchased a Hive Tyrant customizable set, and just realized how many different options there were for it.
This is where the question popped up; What SIZE magnets would be the best to use for EVERY item for the Hive Tyrant?
(Wings, Heavy Venom Cannon, Bone Sword+ Lash Whip, etc.)
The faster I know, the better!!
And what about every other Tyranid model?
Does one size fit all or no?
I just started magnetizing my bugs, and after buying a few of the different sizes available I found that the smallest I could find worked great (D:4mm x W:1.5mm circlular rare earth magnets) for my metal hive tyrants and their shenanigans.
For the bigger ones, like the tyrannofex I think bigger magnets might be needed. I just did my tyrannofex yesterday and while the small ones hold the guns in place, the guns are too heavy for the magnets to keep them upright..sooo, probably bigger ones for the bigger bugs.
Hope that helps
Its most deffinately not one size fits all. rare earth magnets are cheap as dirt, my advice is by a heap of different sizes. the only thing you need to do it make sure that they are strong enough to hold the part in place firmly but not too strong that its hard to pull it appart. My metal tyrant has 4X 6mm Diameter 10mm deep magnets drilled into its arm sockets, and each arm has a 5mm Diameter 3mm deep. thats what it took to stop his metal arms from drooping. be careful of how you orientate the poles too, mine are done all opposites, eg...
left arm top = N
right arm top = S
left arm bottom = S
right arm bottom = N
the magnets inside the torso like sitting that way best but it means you can't put bottom arms in the top holes, which isn't an issue for me because I only ever have my HVC on the bottom or a pair of sything tallons (which there are two of, so I have a pair for the top too) everything else has magnets for the top.
I've only magnetised a few items, but I struggled to get any magnet to hold the wings onto the body of my 3rd ed HT (was using HE dragon wings), and in the end I just pinned and glued them onto a trygon to make a harpy instead.
One thing ill say though is If 1 magnet is not enough to hold an item upright etc, consider using a pin and magnet or 2 magnets. For the aforementioned harpy, I used 2x 2mmx4mm pot magnets to secure the weapons (HVC/Stranglethorn) that way they dont rotate and stay very firmly in place. On my hierodule I used the mag and pin method and its enough to keep the bulky arms in place with the pin making sure they dont ping off.
Some purists might shout at me for doing that, but I work with what I have to hand, otherwise you could spend a long time shopping for diff magnets and varying strengths etc and waste a lot of them by never using them. hope this helps.
