Welcome to Librarium Online!
I know that this is most probably going to get shouted down just as I post it, but what are the thoughts on 72 tau fire warriors, half with Rifles and half with carbines for mobility backed up by the Odd Hammerhead or Pirahna.
There is something lurking in the back of my mind that is telling me that it is a very bad idea (Ld 7 might be it...) but it seems that 72 Shots per turn (ish) is enough to threated the rhino/razor spam lists out there and is large enough to go after Chimelta teams.
Silly Idea? It might be worth thinking about given GWs track record of making weak units a hell of a lot stronger when codex's get updated.
Silly idea? Quite possibly. The Sheer amount of S5 shots you'd be pumping out would definitely make any army shudder, but every army would have a way of dealing with it. You'd need to vary it up a bit, throw down a couple units of Kroot with hounds on the sides things coming in from the flank would be hampered and held up for a while (maybe even Krootox for some S7 shots on side armour?). The Leadership problem could be quite a big one but the inclusion of a Shas'Vre upgrade with a couple marker drones would be able to help that and it would increase the units accuracy.
Another thing to consider would be stealthsuits, a full six man squad with burst cannons for 18 S5 shots into tthe softer parts of an army.
You might even consider an Ethereal just for the access to the Honour Guard squad, BS4 standard for a unit of Firewarriors might make some people panic.
It might be a silly list but it would certainly be fun.
Where a marine player to face that list, that included a couple of ironclads in drop pods he would have a good day indeed.
The biggest problem is the LD of the tau. They just brake so easily.
Praise be to the Emperor!!
Silly idea? I don't think so. But expect to get swamped by the opponent on turns 2-3 though.
I've been thinking of a Tau horde recently, playing with list possibilities and such, and came to the conclusion of having the min. squad of Fire Warriors in Devilfish with a DP upgrade and filling the rest of the Troop FOC slots with units of 15 Kroot with 10 Kroot Hounds. This huge unit only costs a meagre 165 points, allowing you to fill the board with 125 bodies ALL outflanking if you want to mix up up a bit, later I found it easy to have the usual XV8's, XV88's and Hammerheads in there as well without sacrificing the lists offensive capability.
I haven't tried the list out yet as I don't have the models for the kroot but, on paper, this list sounds a blast. I'll see if I can proxy it and tell you all how it went .
I remember playing a list similar to this but for DE, it was just two lords and loads of warriors, back in 3rd & 4th ed it was quite brutal, don't know how a fire- warrior version would fare my initial instinct is it wouldn't, think about coming up against a guard list with plenty of pie templates or a fast list like the new DE, it might do well against foot slogging orks giving you time to shoot but there are to many "turn 2" assault builds out there you would encounter, the fact is our troops choices aren't up to scratch against the other codex's.
Hopefully we'll get a heavy drone option in the new book for firewarriors to take that would fit in with the fluff and make them more tactful.

We ve tried a list of Tau FWs vs DAs greenwing Power armor only(mine).
Well,i outshot him in a sense.
I had 3 devs full squads with heavy bolters and all my 3 of my tac squads with plasma guns.
Needless to say when the heavy bolters were firing tau squads were breaking left and right. Not to say anything about casualties, armor was effectively nonexistent on both sides but i had LD 9 where upon my tac squads despite horrendous losses(they took the brunt head on with minimal cover,i used them as meet shields charging no mans land)were holding fast and the devastators had their cover and ablative wounds so to speak.Castled on the corner of the table each squad that broke effectively left the battlefield.
I can only imagine what will happen if you face a grey knight list, where all their squads pack stormbolters with psibolts.Or terminator heavy armies.
EDIT:Now that i think about it they dont need psibolt at all.
For the record you will be facing more or less the same bodies that i deployed(it is a joke that DA marines cost the same as a full kited GK squad) around seventy-ish.
Want to try the FWs vs a pure assault marine list supported by a couple of dreads.I think it will be a total massacre.
Any way, your idea holds merit as a gunline but that damned LD is too low to keep them on the table.I dont know if theres something you can do to fix that(does the space pope boost their leadership or no?)but i would keep that list to friendly games only.
Both of us had huge fan and laughs and decided to model some of our soldiers to commemorate the event. But from a competitive stand point id say no.
Praise be to the Emperor!!
72 FW sounds impressive and you may get two turns of shooting before they are neutralised (either dead or most targets in combat). I don't think it works in practice against some of the tougher armies with good saves and FNP etc. As already stated, armour becomes a problem.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
