Does anyone run FB's on their XV8's?
I have 3 with shields and MP's I use to deep strike into tank lines, pretty fun but it is a suicide mission. As with most things in my lists this build doesn't feature here
I can't really afford to sacrifice an entire XV-8 team just to pop a tank or two. Especially considering how expensive that would be with the shield generators.
I use them on Piranha which is pretty effective...but i probably wouldn't sacrifice an XV8 squad to kill a tank or two.
We who have seen war will never stop seeing it....In the silence of the night, we will always hear the screams....
Fire knives all the way? Does any one take shields?
"If I kill you, my soul is bound for hell. It is a price I shall gladly pay."
Theres no real point, rather expensive upgrade that takes away some of the other options to boot, such as multi trackers or targetting arrays, and it is available elsewhere in the form of JSJ-ing behing terrain to get that 4+ cover save.
6th edition may change this but as it stands the Piranha is the only real Fusion platform worth investing in. If you have Railguns and Missile pods then you really do not need Fusions on XV8's.
I quite enjoy a single suit with Twin-linked Fusion blasters and a Targetting array deepstriking in. If (and only if) you can spare an elite slot to take one, he's almost always useful (I'm assuming the reroll from the pathfinder d'fish/tetra's here)
Another thing is the Plasma does not really gel with the Railgun (neither does the SMS for that matter but at least you don;t pay extra for it). Plasma is not really an anti armour weapon (it can pop mid AV but struggles) and the range is mismatched.
The idea with the XV88 is to keep them as far away as possible from the opponents units to maximise survivability and Plasma is short ranged, so the fact is ideally you shouldn't be using the Plasma anyway so the points spent on it are really pretty much a waste.
I would rather spend the points on a gun drones to extend survivability
I have a single suit that has TL FB and sits with my Shas'el (AFP and PR) and another suit (PR MP). I put a detonator on the TL FB suit too. So, hes basically there to drop some heavy damage in my command unit and stays behind if the unit loses combat and brings some hurt. It works OK, but could very likely be improved upon.
The helios suits can have their niche but it will greatly depend on your local metagame. My elite slots are quite full to be honest with 2 units of fireknife and 1 torch unit.
If I had the points I would maybe have a bodyguard of helios suits to deal with all those 2+/FNP units that seem to be everywhere.
You could go for the twin-fusion target lock variety with two suits and use them as a "suicide unit" but I really don't like doing that.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
