Whilst I await the arrival of the new wraith models I was pondering what I could use as a dedicated CC unit in the meantime. Then I started to wonder about this idea:
5 Lychguard with Sword + Board is 225 pts. Instead I could get 5 Lords with Hyperphase swords, 2 War scythes and a Res Orb for the same points. Now my thinking was that what if I put those Lords with an Overlord and perhaps one or 2 Crypteks with the ap 1 weapon in a Ghost Ark. Instead of having this slow moving CC unit, I'd have a squad in an AV 13 open topped transport giving me an effective charge range of 20". Whilst I would lose the 4+ inv save, instead I get 2 Strength 7 weapons, and ever living meaning I'll always get that 4+ RP. I know there's been discussion before in regards to the full Lord/Warscythe/MMS deathstar but has anyone tried something similar to this and found it effective?
Provided you're not charging a unit full with power weapons I feel this unit would fair well.
i always wondered this, but have never done it because to me it just doesn't seem worth it. id rather run 5 lychgaurd+swords and dispersion shields with lord with mss, res orb, labyrinth and war scythe.
having the 4+invunerable save and the 4++ is better than no save and 4++. lychgaurd shouldn't be getting into any combat they can't handle, so they shouldn't be running away!
I guess the main benefit is the fact that the lords can be placed in the Ark which they can inevitably charge out from. You could also throw in 2-3 of the AP1 template crypteks to the mix to make a very sick pre-charge shooting attack. Guess it all comes down to the point cost and play style. I think I would take the Lord unit over 5 lychguard without the shields, but that 4+ inv is often missed.
If you were willing to spend a little more, you could go with something like:
Eternity.tek w/ Timesplitter Cloak
Lord w/ Warscythe & Res.orb
Lord w/ Warscythe
Lord w/ Sword
Lord w/ Sword & Phase shifter
A pretty expensive unit, but they're majority toughness 5, 2 3++ saves, nearly all power weapons, and two scythes in the mix. If Deathguard are any indication, all it takes is a couple storm shields to really make a unit resilient.
Well, probably not, but I do always think that a solid court (one that isn't spread to other squads) is an underrated unit. Even 5 basic crypteks with staves of light is pretty cheap for what is effectively 15 str5 ap3 shots, though you're looking at a really short range.
