What would you recommend to start say a 1000 point dark eldar army?
when i first started mine i got warriors wytches and incubi plus a few raiders (that really all that was out at the time ) maybe try to pick up 2 battleforces
I would agree a couple battleforces would start you off pretty well. When I started my army I got three boxes of wyches and a warrior squad an archon and four raiders. With this I was able to get a few games in and really begin to see the strengths and weaknesses of the Dark Eldar.
Hope that helps
There are a lot of ways to play Dark Eldar. I think the best start is to think about which units appeal to you most then build up the support elements that will help them to function the best.
Personally I really like wyches and so for my 1750 point army I took three squads and three raiders for them to ride in and get them where they need to be. Wyches really need a pain token so a haemonculus for each squad was a must-have. Then I got a pair of ravagers to give them ranged fire support. Their job is to open up enemy transports and counter terminators in terminator heavy, e.g. draigowing, lists.
The next "essential" unit was a pair of 3-strong jetbike squads. These are for blocking enemy troops. Simply turboboosting and standing in the way of enemy troops can slow down their movement and lets the wyches focus on a part of their army without their friends coming to help.
After that I just added more utility units that I liked the look of. Some scourges with haywire blasters can stunlock troublesome enemy vehicles. I took a razorwing partly because it's cool! It has a pair of darklances and the 4 monoscythe missiles. That really obliterates any enemy troops that are left in the open.
To round it out I added 5 incubi for more CC punch and some trueborn with blasters. These small squads both fit inside Venoms so that gives me some extra anti-infantry fire.
Anyway the key is to get a good idea of the kind of force you'll enjoy playing. That will let you make more intelligent purchases. If you end up wanting jetbikes, wyches, warriors and raiders then the starter box is a great buy. If you want a carnival of flesh and a bunch of hellions then it really won't help you much. If you're undecided a pair of wych squads in raiders is a really solid core that will work well with pretty much any other units backing it up, from hellions to beast squads to incubi, it's all useful. That's a roundabout way of saying, "I'd go for the 2x starter boxes". I wouldn't make up 20 warriors though. Keep the bits, make up some with exposed heads as trueborn and others with closed heads as Incubi using spare swords and daggers from the various sprues you have. That's what I did anyway. A bit low-rent but much cheaper!
