I was toying with the idea of trying to play a phalanx style list...has anyone tried this yet? I posted a phalanx list here:
What do you think? Anyone tried anything similar?
When footslogging Warriors have Crypteks amongst them and are supported by Ghost Arks and Annihilation Barges... Yes, its VERY viable. I've played mostly that ever since the new Codex came out.
Revenant Moon Necrons: (W/L/D) 0/1/0 (6th edition: 13/2/2)(5th edition: 14/6/4)(3rd edition Codex: 16/4/7)
XIX Legion: (W/L/D) 0/0/0 (5th edition: 14/12/2)(5th edition Codex: 4/3/0)
Black Legion: (W/L/D) 1/0/0 (6th edition: 2/3/0)
Something Wicked... Reikwald Beastmen: (W/L/D) 10/4/1
I've run lists that have 2 blocks of 15 with an overlord +res orb and a lightning field cryptek backed by a ghost ark many times. I've recieved many insults for how hard it is to decimate these squads because only a real effort or a lucky assault (or a 5 man squad of 2+ saves or T6 combatants) will break the squad for an overrun.
generally though, these things get thinned out by the 30 shots rapid fire. I'm going to be trying out another list that has imotehk (or an overlord) in a squad of 20 with a res orb in it backed by 2 arks that have squads inside.
Generally a squad of 15-20 with an orb and a ghost ark backing it is very hard to kill with shooting (mine have even survived a DE voidraven dropping 4 large blasts on it). I assure you, few things will make you smile like having a 20 man squad get reduced to 2 or 3 and then have 15 of them get back up (lucky rolls) just before your opponent declares an assault with a five man squad of something basic and then the ghost arks putting it back to full strength on your turn.
I can imagine a world without fear, a world without pain, a world without war. And I can imagine conquering that world because they would never see it coming.
It's only crazy if it doesn't work.
in my mind i have always seen a phalanx as (M-W-G-I-G-W-M)
M - monolith
g- ghost ark
i - immortals
so basically you have monoliths on each flank protecting your core, phaerons in the warriors (15 strong) and teslamortals in the centre, moving as one
the arks keep the warriors alive and provide excellant shooting (plus i'll have stuck some lance teks in them, maybe a pulse or two)
still a very good playable list. I usually run a squad of 15 warriors or two backed up by my two ghost arks. With an orb in the squad 14 warriors dying will result in, on average, 11 standing back up =). What i would suggest it try and fit in gaze of flame in a squad that big, it really helps when your opponent throws their CC squads against you with furious charge and other charging bonuses.
FYI, the Necron SPAM list has proven to be very brutal, especially early on as the opponent closes on you (or you close on them). I played a buddy of mine and his 90+ necrons were almost ORK like, and so much accurate shooting (even though AP5 and such) was VERY effective! He had 6 full troop choices, a squad of 6 wraiths for counter charge/protection...and I forget the rest. All in all, I ended up winning by 1 objective because I was able to end the draw in the 6th turn. Still, at the end of the 3rd turn I was certain I was going to lose due to the pain he put on me in the first 3 rounds...

now i am intrigued. how many points were you playing dark trainer? Wraiths i like, and 1 have 60+ warriors from the last codex and i tried to fit them all into an army list but i find that too many are not good at low points. Could you maybe get a copy of his list and post it =)? Thanks.
I'm curious aswell to wether or not the phalanx style list still works under the new codex. My style of play under the old codex was purely based around a troop spam styled setup and like Dark Trainer said it proved to be brutal. Even if you ended up being beaten your opponent wouldn't have an easy time going about it.
I'm currently looking to adapt my previous list to the new codex in a similar phalanx way with lots of troop spam. Adapting to the new Codex 1850pt Shooty
i beginning to think that the phalanx was the old codex thing
i mean you can still do the phalanx but it worked so much better in the previous codex. res orb was awesome, monoliths were beast and everything seemed to work. now, not so much, though the codex has been improved its changed
As to the questions above (it was 2000 points), this buddy of mine acquired an army from someone and he didn't flesh it out yet. However the Core that was effective was this.
Overlord w/Warscythe + Phaeron
Tranzyn the Infinite
6 wraiths (3 whips, 1 particle caster)
Then the rest was stuff like 5 destroyers with 3 heavy upgrades (not my fav anti tank, would replace)
3 Spyders and 2 scarab swarms of like 5-8+...
(I can't recall the list exactly, but certain on the troops)
Honestly, he was just playing with what he had. I boasted about you sure you wanna play? It was a Necron on Necron battle. I had my Command barges, stalker, etc (fleshed out list). He proved AGAIN my list isn't prepared for complete hordes (or at least struggle). Basically it opened my eyes to the aspect MANY armies have problems with HORDES. Throw as much at them as you can and it's tough. Also my vehicles being open topped ended up being the real death from all his Gauss. Also, I imagine a FULLY mech list (rhino's, razorbacks, etc) would hurt him badly. Much the same way I was unprepared for HORDE, he'd be unprepared for NON open topped full mech lists or FAST assault (like mech Orks with open topped and waaaggh, etc.
If I were to flush out his list it'd be something like this
-love the troops, would make one a 20 man squad with Phaeron lord just to benefit relentless.
-Wraiths (enough said)
-Trayzn was interesting
-Overlord with Phaeron
-Scarabs w/Spyder spawning
-Add some COURT models to his setup
-Ghost ark (or 2), so many warriors on foot could benefit from respawning too (imagine spawning scarabs AND warriors)
-Heavy Destroyers with some other anti tank
-Trazyn was fun, not a game changer so You could take other HQ's, however he had his strength
I'm sure there's more, but this is just off memory (was over 2-3 weeks ago)
