I posted this over at the Tyranid forum, but me thinks this is a better place to ask this:

I've had the excellent fortune to draw a Combat Patrol mission against a Tau player in a tournament at my game store. The guy running it has set it up where each player filled up a Force org Chart before the tourny began(2 HQs, 6 troops, etc. etc.), and each mission we fill our points cost from this pool.

I'm not positive what my opponent has to choose from, but I know he has some vehicles. I really don't know Tau, but I know that Combat Patrol only allows vehicles that have 33 total armor or less to be fielded. How many tanks could he feasibly field (in the 400 pts constraint), along the mandatory unit of troops? I have 'Stealer units and leaping Warrior units that I could use to try and take down tanks, but I'm worried he'll just outmanuver me and blast me from range.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

That sounds like a poop fight. May have to just give the stiff arm to the tank and go for whatever is not running on diesel.

Well, Tau only have two tanks. Devilfish (transport) and hammerheads. Hammerheads have 35 total armor, so he can't use them, and the devilfish isn't really good for anything besides transport and isn't useful on a small board. SO you shouldn't see any tanks.

Actually, if you ask me, you kinda have him over a barrell. Hammerheads are one of the best ways to fight tyranids. Nids basically can't kill hammerheads at all, and the submunition tears your low save broods right up. Without it he's screwed.

One problem is your basic troops kill his basic troops pretty easy. Firewarriors are really good but they're really bad vs nids, especially hormagaunts. If the FW are lucky they get two rounds of shooting on you, if they're unlucky, they get one. If you get minto CC with anything, the Tau are dead.

The tau only saving grace then is Crisis suits and stealth suits, they move 6" and then an addition 6" in the assault phase, but your hormagaunts and ravenors are some of the only units that can run them down. If you really want to make him cry, use a lictor to suprise and hold down a unit.

I think you're not allowed to get TMCs in Combat patrol, but that's fine, your carnifex and un-wingedtyrants are two of the untis crisis suits have the easiest time killing.

Truth of the matter is that this small board, small unit game of combat patrol is massivley skewed in your favor (nids). You should wipe the floor with him. His best bet might just be to get massive numbers of kroot and snipe and out CC your ass, which is just stupid and funny, all at the same time.

Actually, nids tend to get kinda shafted in small point games. Everything in the tau army is capable of chewing up your units at range. Don't worry about tanks, worry alot about crisis and stealth suits.
The enemies of the Emperor fear many things. They fear discovery, defeat, despair and death. Yet there is one thing they fear above all others. They fear the wrath of the Space Marines!

gene stealers are your friend, i'd recomend 2 squads to make sure that at least one of them gets to infiltrate last (i shafted my friends 'stealers with infiltrating stealth suits). they will also be able to take down any devilfish with ease

Well, in this case, I'm limited to the units I chose before the tournament (of which I can field a combo of my 9 ST stealers, my 10 ST stealers, 4 units of 20 Gaunts with variying up grades, 3 units of 1 Ravener with ST/RC, and 2 units of 3 Warriors, leaping and maxed out for HtH). In this case, I'm probably looking at 20 Gaunts and 3 Warriors for my force.

I know for his mandatory troop choice, he's taking Kroot (in this mission he doesn't have to take his obligatory FW squad). I know about the Hammerhead (Warp Blast made short work of it), but last time I faced a Devilfish, I glanced it for 3 turns before taking it out, and it never got to fire. I'm a little worried that I'll massacre his foot troops, and then be left with a transport that moves faster than me and can just nickle-plink me to death from range. Even with my upgraded guys, I doubt I'll come out unscathed from HtH (without some very unlucky morale rolls on my opponents side) and depending how long the battle goes, he might win by just whittling away at my troops.

Think I'm going to download a copy of Army Builder and check out some Tau stats...thanks for everyones suggestions.

Hmmm, I'd be wary of taking kroot against nids in a small point game, there HtH isn't gonna match yours ever so in your case, hope he does!

He could pack in 2 DFishes, with 2 full size fire warrior teams (12) but that doesn't seem efficient to me. I'd stick in some stealths, maybe squeeze a crisis suit with some unusual weapons, tl burst cannon and flamer? because you know it's gonna get close and dirty!

    Maybe some drones to harass.

    Let us know the outcome!!

Definetly. The game is Monday, so I'll post up a battle report that night.

I can only hope this Combat Patrol goes half as well as my previous mission against the other Tau player in this tourny. I had 577 pts left on the board, he had 0 pts left on the board.

Well, sadly, all of my prep was for nothing. My opponent could not make it to the game last night due to unforseen circumstances, and my stand in was a Khorne Beserker player who I wiped off the board by the top of turn 3. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

HA! And those Berzerkers thought they were all the rage. Shameless pun.

I wonder if Khorne is still happy when the enemy biodegrades all the skulls of his favorite sons...
