The name basicly expalins it, but plz dont say necrons, if necrons are your hardest, go to your second hardest.
I would guess that Tyranids beat Tau more than any other army. Their high speed, lethal close combat abilitys, and Lictors make them very versitile and oriented well towards taking advantage of Tau's horrific close combat abilitys.
If I were to guess at a Runner-Up, it would probably be Space Marines... more so now with their new Codex, as they can mass high numbers of Assault Marines. Imagine 70 Assault Marines on the Table. :hmm:
I think my hardest matchup is probably Space Marines, cause their 3+ saves allow them to get up into melee with my fire warriors and eat them for breakfast.
of course necrons are my hardest to beat.

70 assault marines... Does Games Workshop not take into account how insanely easy it would be to beat any Tau player with such a force? Do they take no heed to balance?! Good God, the insanity!
Or 6 Dreadnaughts in Drop pods Deep Striking....
Or 6 Land Speeders Deep Striking....
They can also use 6 Land Raider Crusaders now too!
Yeah, a last week i would have said necrons, which are still tough. But Jesus H Christ the new SM book is just ridiculous. 4 HQs! (2 per unit per choice) Sorry, but i'm not sure how i'm gonna be two librarians and two chaplains in the same army, screw that!"woah billy"

Agreed, the new SM codex is going to present significant problems for us tau players. As far as I can tell, they took the marines (who, as far as I can tell, were not exactly lacking in the power department before) and made them significantly better. I'm not sure how exactly we'll deal with space marines++.
Each of these specialized marine armies has an achilles heel and can be defeated, you just have to build your army specifically to do it.
70 assault marines wouldn't be able to touch a fully Mechanized army. They wouldn't have anything to Assault! Meanwhile you blast them to bits with Hammerheads and burscannon fire. Once a squad is whittled down to 3 or 4 models, unload a squad of Firewarriors within rapid fire range to finish 'em off.
Wash, rinse, reapeat.
6 Dreads (or Landraiders) wouldn't stand a chance against sustained railgun fire... something a Static Tau army has in abundance.
Three maxed out Squads of Plasma/Fusion suits deepstriking and guided by markerlights could eat an all-termie army for breakfast.
The point is that no Tau army can do all these things at once. Essentially these armies are one trick ponies... it's just that their tricks are really good!
