I posted this in another topic, a few down the list, but wanted more Orkses to view it, so I thought I'd repost it here.
I'm just starting Tyranids but I know many 40k players end up having 2 or 3 or even more armies eventually. Thinking a few months down the road, I'm planning on starting Orks as my second army mostly because I think they have the most character, the boyz models look great, and Orks are vastly lacking representation where I live (not a single Ork player!.
I do have a question for all Ork vets, though. I keep reading that Orks are hard to play (this appeals to me) and to win you have to use more strategy than most armies, like SM (this also appeals to me). But all I keep hearing is that you have to charge the enemy, not divide your forces, and hit CC ASAP. This doesn't sound like there's much tactical variation here. Sounds like you just send your entire horde running and hope most make it to CC.
So what are some variations in Ork strategy? Gimme what ya got! Even weird, one-time maneuvers that worked... (has anyone actually won a battle by doing something un-Ork-like...such as out-shooting an army? If so, how?)
I know you can have variation armies, like Speed Freaks, but what are different tactics that a regular, mostly foot-slogging Ork army can use, just to spice things up?
P.S. Thanks to Gathrog for posting his reply in the other topic ("All of you read this!")
ork tatics are broad and vary greatly depending on what army you face...the scope that other ork players use is great and in the grand sceme of things look alot alike in the long run: get there and kill.
for me, it is the same essence but i have a very versitle army in the sense that i use DeathSkulls which is a shooty army (that still has to rely on orky shooting which isnt very reliable ) but even though i deploy lots of fire power, it is merly a coy so that my main body of boyz can get there and kill. any thing that my looted baslisk, Battlewagon, Lootas, Dread and Warbikes can shoot up is a bonus but they are ultimatly sponges for my enemy to shoot at while my Warboss and Co. come on up and start hacking away.

JUST GET DERE FASTA! Trukks that is da key.....oh and a little bit a' old morky-ness, to get em' there.
