With Christmas coming I'm thinking of starting a third army, and since Tau only lost to Necrons on a coin flip last time, I'm going with them.

Now this is going to be more of a fun army for me, so I'm going with the theme of Tyranid hunters (Nids being my favorite army, I've got tons of scrap parts). I'm going to be picking up the codex and a box of FW over the weekend, but thought I'd run some of the conversion ideas past the Tau players here.

I'm thinking that my section of the Tau enclave has had to deal with the Nids on a heavier basis than the other races. My squad leaders and HQ figures will be veterans of Tyranid campaigns, and will bear scars from the encounters. One of the things I was going to do was do up some battle damage on my HQ choice, be it a beaten and cracked Crisis Suit or a scarred Ethereal. Based on that, all of the armored warriors and suit teams would have the same "scars" as symbols on their shoulder pads or helmets.

The Kroot mercs would have scavenged Nid parts to use in combat, from scything talons used as blades and bayonettes to Tyranid backplates and crown growths used as armor. Later, I was thinking of getting a Tyrant head and tying it down to a HammerHead, like a war trophy.

If anyone else has any suggestions or ideas, or can point me to some fluff for more inspiration, I'd appreciate it.

That sounds like an AWESOME idea. I am doing similar stuff with my Tau but with Orks as well. Lets have some more ideas.

    Very nice theme!

For scaring and damage, A good look is to use a hobby knife, heated under a lighter for your plastics. For a clawed look, use jagged impressions, or alternitively you can "tear" into the armor by stabbing the hot knife in first, then dragging it down. For a laser burn, i suggest getting a long razor blade, and just make on long straight cut.

For metal, it will take a little more clever use of the hobby knife, and greenstuff.

For acid splatters, use a small bit hand drill, and drill numerous small holes in one small area, to provides a speckled blotched look. Might wanna paint those areas black with dry brushed metal... and arround the edges dry brush the main color of your miniature to show where the paint on it would be scarred.

I hope you post pics, sounds awesome, esspecially the Hive Tyrants head, BRILLIANT!

    Great idea!

And there are lots of excellent anti-tyranid weapons available in the Tau Armory for you to kit your warriors out with. I would suggest a mobile force, the better to keep your distance with the ravaging horde, equipped with lots of pulse weapons, burst cannons, flamers, and a few Railheads for their submunitions.

    Good luck!

I imagine, considering the attack speed of tyranids, that a Tau anti-tyranid army would be extremely mobile. With that in mind, perhaps it would be a good idea to suit all your firewarrior teams in Devilfish. Broadsides would be absolutely horrible (fluff-wise) against tyranids, as the idea of standing still is the surefire way to lose. Perhaps three squads of firewarriors in devilfish, three hammerheads, two full stealth teams and a full (anti-infantry) crisis suit team, a shas'o and/or shas'el suited out to go after those big 'uns, as an Ethereal honestly just seems out of place to me there. Where would you put him? Bugs can attack him anywhere. For fast attack it strikes me an anti-tyranid team would include many drones to use as speed bumps when the 'nids attacks. Why risk Tau lives in hand to hand when there are perfectly good frisbees to do so? Pathfinders would be out of place, as by the time they're close enough to markerlight something much less carbine the sucker there's gonna be a whole world of hurt for 'em. Honestly I think an army like that could even stand a chance against one of those seeding-swarm lists. I mean gaunts are nice and all but seriously, what're the chances of one of them taking down a hammerhead or devilfish? And even better, what's the chance of a tyranid list living through three or four full troops of Firewarriors plopping down and rapid firing the suckers?

I have an Idea but it could look good only if you do it right, take a claw, or an ork choppa and have it still in the suit it can look cool having a claw dug into their suit. And I recomend a dark camo scheme for your army. Seeing how Nids eat life things get dark, and dwery.
The Predator Lingers forth. Suddenly the sound of several wipping sounds can be heard far off into the distance, a second later the once mighty Predator ignited with flames. "Sir what was that" The srgt replied "Its those damn Broadsides"

Hear the wip, fear the Broadside.

In 4th edition, you can now deploy IC's into squads... so if a Devilfish only has 11 Firewarriors in it, you can deploy the Ethereal into the Devilfish and have him join the unit of Firewarriors.

any of you that have seen alien-vs.-predator probably remember when the predator gives the human an alien head to use as a shield and an alien claw as a spear? that would be cool.

I like the idea, don't forget the kroot evolve, so kroot vets might have tryanid colourings, or even hauch them over like steelers.

The're not going to change stat wise but they are ripe for converting fluff wise!

When I get Kroot, I was going to give them their own color scheme, but pick a few out and color them like my Nid army, especially the ones I convert to have Nid parts as weapons or armor.
