Throughout the constant complaining about low Tau BS, some worthwhile things came out. One guy mentioned that the best way to do it would be to use d10's or something to improve the range of numbers available, to give a 3.5 of sorts, but it struck me that this already exists.
Why not give Tau soldiers the "sharpshooting" ability and let them re-roll 1's? This isn't as broken as giving Tau BS4, nor does it ignore the technology of the Tau. If you look on the Games Workshop website under the IG doctrines thing it mentions that sharpshooting is a good way to show the Adeptus Mechanicus' targeting systems. Tau have targetting systems, so why not give them the same rule? I'm not sure what the statistics are for sharpshooting but it strikes me as a good compromise.

I would say this might only be applicable for the battlesuits if anything. Marines have targeting systems in their armor as well, but they don't get to sharp shoot. I think the BS 3 is an accurate representation of a normal military marksmanship. Marines mainly have BS 4 because they have been shooting for centuries, something a firewarrior has no way of doing. It's all about accumulated experience. Technology will only get you so far, in the end it comes down to the ability of the shooter.
The enemies of the Emperor fear many things. They fear discovery, defeat, despair and death. Yet there is one thing they fear above all others. They fear the wrath of the Space Marines!
A Fire Warrior trains as much as much anyone in their possition can.
Keep in mind, your not going to have any 40 year veteran Tau. Their average lifespan is only 40 years!
Space Marines are genetically engineered to last a long time, and survive the harshed of invironments.
The average, unskilled citizen would have a BS of 1
Someone with minor skill, i.e. having shot a gun a couple times, would have a BS of 2.
a BS of 3 represents anyone who uses them on a regular basis. Be they a hunter, a soldier, or what not.
BS 4 Tau or even sharpshooters for them is powerful, they are a good STR 5 and ok AP 5(for the most part), and giving them the ability to get those back, is really strong (IMO). IG can have it bc its STR 3, and AP -, they are weak, let them re-roll!

I dunno, I think a sharpshooter type upgrade would be kinda neat. Maybe, take firewarriors as an elite choice and they get the sharpshooter upgrade...that would be quite in line with some of the options other factions tend to get, while not being very overpowered at all. Afterall, Elite choices are most definitely the most important to the Tau (Crisis suits? Yeah.)
this is what i think. if you pay like 2-3 points extra for model you can give them a shapshooter ability. they can re roll ones but, on there re roll they have to roll 5-6.Originally posted by Sandhawk03@Nov 13 2004, 12:14
extra points balences this out.
what do you guys think
1 more till my 150th post
I think that 3 is quite alright for the FW's, sure I'd love them to hit more, but come on, when they hit, you know it!
Maybe the solution is a new troop choice, as fluff wise tau veterans get suits, a new suit could be created, the sharp shooter veterans, instead of getinng Xv8's 88's or 6's could form a new unit.
They would have bs4 to represent the best shooters from FW squads and thier suits would have the technology on board to allow them to move 6 and shoot once at 30 (These are the best shooters in the army) or twice at 12, stableizers and increased scopage etc.
it might provide a +3 save but I'd say stick with +4 and keep them cheaper, not assult move and devilfish moutable. Maybe squad size 8, to reduce the number of 30' shots and restricted to 1 per army.

Eek, run away. There's only four of us left! (||)
Fire Warriors are not elites, they're troops. BS 3, for the reasons mentioned above, suits them fine. If you want to make a squad an elites choice by giving them Sharpshooters, then you're wasting an elites slot IMO.
Sharpshooters for Pathfinders makes sense, but not for rail rifles. Eh, best just to leave things alone, I think.

Suffer not the unclean to live,
And have a beer when you're done.
Yup Tau are just fine the way they are. BS3 suits a basic troop just fine. The point is when you do hit your' weapons pack a punch and that is what I have always thought Tau were supposed to be like, not necessarily the best marksmen but the technology to back it up when they do hit.
