Im thinking of starting Eldar, but im not too sure yet. I read an article in the Tyranid forum and this guy asked some people to tell him some pros and cons and try to make him convinced on tyranids. Can u guys do the same for me? Thnx
im about to start a small eldar force as well, not sure what to have in a 40k in 40mins force at the moment :glare: any ideas on that would be appreciated as well
Well, I'm not a normal Eldar player, but I've had some experience...
Pros: Good variety of units/craftworlds, FAST army, Brightlance is GREAT for tank hunting, and they need a lot of strategy to play.
Cons: Crap armor for most of your army, weak tanks, bad range on the average gun, and they need a lot of strategy.
Maybe you could try to proxy a small game and see how they work for you? Maybe borrow a fellow Eldar player's codex instead of buying it.
Eldar have the best tanks in the game fyi. Falcon is pretty much the king of all tanks due to skimmer + holofield and it can get a ton of shots plus transport. Also you can make an eldar army with pretty much all 3+ saves. I do agree it takes a lot of strategy tho as the army isnt as durable or large as someCons: Crap armor for most of your army, weak tanks, bad range on the average gun, and they need a lot of strategy.
eldar are a fast army and have a lot of variations to make your army unique, ie a lot of choices, different craft worlds. every unit has a specific role ie. banshees are very good against marines and 3+ save armies, fire dragons are very good against tanks and very heavy infantry, ie. terminators. wraithlords make good fire magnets. and eldar tanks are the best in the game. you can make them take only glancing hits, which your opponent rolls 2 dice on the damage table for and takes the lowest, then you have a chance to ignore the result (if its crew stunned or crew shaken)
however, if your overly specialised squads are attacked by something they are inequipped to deal with, then they will die shockingly easily- eg. reapers in cc, or banshees against orks.
I think eldar as an army have the most potential for specialisation- you can make them fast (saim hann) tough (Iyanden) long ranged (Alaitoc) or better at killing stuff (Ulthwe). You can even make you own based on aanother feature- basing your whole army on heavy weaponry, for example: Lots of Dark Reapers and support platforms would make even a Tau player feel jealous. The only downside to this is that when you excel in one field, you are usually total crap in the other. My ulthwe gaurdians are amazing within 12" because of their superior BS, they can eliminate nearly a whole squad of orks in one go. However, if they are up against space wolves for example, they would only kill about 3 and then charge and get horrifically mangled in CC. You have to choose what you want to achieve with your army, and excel at it so there is nothing left of the enemy before they can exploit your weakness. That is why eldar are so difficult and fun to play!
FROM THE BOOK OF THE IMPERIUM:
1. Thou shalt not go on a panty raid in the Adaptus Soritus temple.
2. Thou shalt not flirt with Howling Banshees. They are the enemy.
3. Thou shalt not refer to Battle Sisters as Bolter Biatches
4. Darth Vader isn’t the son of Abaddon
5. Thou shalt not reassemble a Necron into a washing machine
Sorry about that, I was meaning their armor values, not the actual tank performance. :hmm: Wasn't specific enough, I guess. The Falcon is a great tank but is easily destroyed unless played correctly, and it would cost a lot of points to make an army with virtually all 3+ saves...they'd be like SMurfs without the heavy weapons, special weapons, and worse stats.Originally posted by Kirasu@Nov 13 2004, 22:32

i think i might try a small force now, might be a bit of a change from my IG though
There's a definite change from IG, believe me (I play IG some). They are much more mobile than an IG force and have much more specialized units, though you will be fielding less models (normally) when playing Eldar. Try out that small force, and good luck with Eldar. ^_^
