Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm fairly new to tyranids and am facing my friend who has an army of blood angels. Does anyone have any specific tactics to defeat them? I only have the forces from the battleforce to work with sofar (will invest in other models soon) but im especially worried because he has his troops that souped up that his veteran squad has 17 attacks. Any tactics/advice is very welcome. Anything to stop me getting slaughtered
here's an important one: make sure you charge him. don't let him charge you!
other than that no, sorry. i've never faught blood angels before. but get a hive tyrant ^_^
His troops will fall horribly to TMC's in CC. You need to fear the Chaplain and his Death Company. Get them into CC with your HT and guard with plenty of gaunts to help.
If he takes Tanks or Dreadnaughts, use a dual VC Carnifex and a shooty HT to bring them down. Once the heavy armor is down, he won't be able to easily kill your TMC's. At that point just be aware of any Power Fists/Weapon on the table and use caution.
Warp Blast is good.
Assault Jumpack marines will tear your gaunts apart on the charge. Engage with a TMC to watch them die.
Terminators are very bad news. Either tie them up with hordes of gaunts for the entire game, or use Genestealers. Rending attacks will force him to use his invulnerable, which is not too great.
And yes, don't let him charge. Unless they have jumpacks, troops can be outrun with leapers. Use that to get away from slower moving, harder hitting marines. Leaper warriors beat regular tactical squads down. They can be really scary.
Finding some terrain close by and infiltrating Genestealers will usually screw up his plans. One thing I use is a Lictor in front of the Genestealers. Engage with Lictor, close in with Genestealers behind the block LOS CC.
Anything that ignores power armor is a good thing. If you can't have that, then you need numbers. I don't go too heavy on gaunts, they generally have a harder time killing BA, so you really only need a couple broods of them to attempt to tie him up/draw fire. I usually ignore spine gaunts in that case and go straight for leapers.
BA excel at killing troops, but are not that great at killing the tougher stuff. They DEPEND on either some assault/standard Terminators OR Tanks/Dreadnaughts for the heavy hitters.
If he takes Devestators, which would be silly, punish him with a Lictor.
Don't let the carnifex get singled out by a squad with power weapons. Its free points for him.
Keep your deployment tight like a swarm. Don't spread too much to where you can't help a squad on the other side of your army. Force him to come to you about center of the table, slightly his side of it. If something gets charged by DC with free jumpacks, everything should be close enough that you should be able to scoot over and counter assault.
Its important to reach out and slap down the tanks/dreadnaughts. If they are down/not shooting you have a good chance to win. The TMC's will reach CC with full wounds and fighting will spill over his ranks. Trying to get into CC with tanks to tip them over usually doesn't work too well against a player who stays away. Ignoring them with CC troops and taking care of them with guns can work to your advantage as far as being quick.
Never underestimate a Bio Acid Spore Mine hit to the rear armor of a tank/dreadnaught.
Some BA units (can't think of which ones, but I know the Death company gets it) can have the Ignore Pain rule, where they get a second save for each failed armor save. The BA player at my club messed this rule up. Anything that denies them an armor save in HtH (TMC attacks, Rending Claw hits that scored a 6) also ignore that Ignore Pain rule (or is it Feel No Pain).

Good tips Pyre...
Make sure your gaunts are initiative 5. That way even on the charge you get your attacks simultaneously, unless going against a souped up Chaplain. After his charge you will go first and that really helps take the burden off of you since he won't get his attacks.
With powered armor troops you need massed, effective attacks. That means you need a minimum of strength 4 so take the toxin sac upgrade. To get a ton of attacks take the talons.
IMO with the initiative 5 that I suggested above, you don't need the weapon skill 4 upgrade to your gaunts. You are still going to need a 4 to hit either way the difference being that he will hit on 3s vs. WS 3. If you make sure the gaunts have I5 as i suggested above you will go first and reduce his attacks so this upgrade IMo is a bit excessive. Other opinions may vary but against marines I don't take it.
In summary, go with a leaping gaunt with WS3 but I5 and S4. He'll cost a little bit more than a hormie but will be a lot more effective.

I5 sounds like a good idea. Also keep in mind he said all he has is the battle force set so no Carnifex or Tyrant. He may be in a little trouble because all he has is 32 guants, 2 warriors and maybe 12 genestealers?
Maybe use the seeing swarm variant? Actually, hw many points is he allowing for the battle? You may be in good shape since marines are going to cost a lot more per unit. You should have about 3 gaunts to every marine and that's not counting youe stealers and warriors. I don't believe you can make CC warriors with the battleforce due to the lack of rending claws they give you whuch sucks. Make sure you give you warriors as many venom cannons as possible. I have a brood of 3 all with Venom cannons as well as another brood of 3 that are all CC, one has a lash whip to reduce the number of attacks. If you haven't modeled your models yet, go down to the local GW store and order the necessary bits. They wont charge you shipping charges on the bitz. At least my store didn't. Send me a private message if you have any questions on what bitz to order. The CC warriors are especially worth it.
ok i have 3 friends that play blood angels and they have neva beaten my nids for one reason and one only..
i get 3 tyrant guard and one mega ultra souped up hive tyrant with exceptional size (the rest of my army being hormies) 2 squads of marines, 4 death company and a death company chaplain couldnt take down my tyrant....the guard fell pretty quickly but bye bye when they tried to get my tyrant. strength 7 toughness 7 with 5 attacks due to the scything talons plus warp blast makes him scary scary...the only character he has been beaten by is the nightbringer.
lots ov hormies are very good because they choose who charges and they buy some time for ya. that and they are quite dangerous to death comanies. lots of saves...lots and lots
with this strategy u ovcourse dont need to worry bout heavy weapons. too many hormies and too many wounds on the tyrant guard to care
--- This is possible, but hard to get...Originally posted by wats_under_my_kilt@Nov 23 2004, 08:46

When dealing with Mutants, never forget to mention the other Species You have, even if You don't use them in games.
Basically, Your Species list would have to look like this:
HQ choice: Tyrant
HQ choice: Guards
E choice: Warriors
T choice: Hormagaunts
FA choice: none
HS choice: Warriors w/VCannons
This based on the fact that Warriors can take different FOC slots depending on equipment, and Bioweapons don't affect Warrior species. Thus You'd have total 4 Species, and would allow You to have a Mutant.
Don't forget to mention the Warriors even if You don't field them, because otherwise people will start pointing out that Your Tyrant Mutant is illegal.
If You're wondering "Illegal? What?", that's because Your Custom Hivefleet Species list and an Army list are two different things! Mutations are counted against the overall Species list, even if You don't field every Species in every game.
Now, from this list I choose the actual units to be used in an Army list:
1000pt Standard Mission
I'd need to take a Tyrant and two units of Hormas to satisfy Mission requirements (HQ + 2 T). I take an extra Tyrant, a brood of Hormas and some gargoyles in addition. My army list will look as following:
3 broods of Hormas
1 brood of Gargs
Now, although I only have 3 Species in my Army list, the Mutation count is based on the Species list of 7!!
Hopefully that made it a bit clearer.

I <3 you, Uzi.
And yes it is not based on your army, it is based on your fleet.
