I plan to play a couple of 500 point battles against a Daemonhunter player and I have a list in mind, but his guys pack just too much punch. He will be using one or two plasma cannons, which hurt alot, as well as justicars which kill a lot as well. Anyway here is my list:
Warrior Brood x3 90 points
Rending Claws, Scythe Talons
Hive Node, Spinefists, (basic gaunt, plus spinefists) 90 points
Hive Node, Scythe Talons (basic, plus the scythe talons) 190 points
Rending Claws, Infiltrate, Blood Telepathy 128 points
This was my original. Now please, tell me what you think would do best against a Daemonhunter Army.
Anyway, is is better to upgrade gaunts or leave them be and add weapons? Is there a better option or just a matter of preference and enemy tactics?
As for Gaunt upgrades, if your enemy is as fast as you are, take that In upgrade. Striking first in HtH can mean the difference between a drawn combat and a whole bunch of dead gaunts.
He's going to go for your Synapse critters first with that Plasma Cannon. I think they are only Str7, so they can't insta-kill you, but keep your troops spread out as much as possible. It only uses the blast temp, so you'll have a good chance of him only catching 1 warrior under it.
In this case, I'd cannabalized that unit of GS (even though they are my favorite unit in the whole game) and give the warriors and scythe gaunts leaping. If he sets up on his deployment edge and you roll well enough, you can get into HtH on turn 1.
I call that manuver the Fecallator, since it makes your opponent crap his pants.
Gyauayuayuayua! Ja! Ve vill crush da little girly men in deir little girl men awrmor! Ve vill see owur enemies driven befowur us, und hear da lahmentaytions of deir wemen. Und from owur home planet, de stayte uf Califowurnia, ve vill lawunch owur mighty offensive. Even if you kill us, ve'll be bach!! Gyauayauyauyauyau!
-Arnoldunit Schwarzenecronegger; when questioned about the impending doom he would rain down upon the heads of his doomed enemies.
Really depends also on what he is fielding.
Are you playing Combat Patrol rules? If not, Hive Tyrant. If so, yeah warriors.
I would reccomend more warriors with full CC upgrades, leaping. As your only source of Synapse (YAY CP RULES) they need to be alive from the majority of the game. They die in droves to even bolter fire. Great on the charge though.
Less gaunts, they won't be able to kill much at those numbers anyway. You need something that ignores Power Armor. Drop em down to maybe 16 or so? Against Marines I always use upgraded WS and I on leapers with ST. Spinegaunts can be handy but sometimes they just don't do very well. Thats a matter of choice. In bigger games they are pretty useful though.
Good on Genestealers, but maybe a full 12.
Don't know what to tell you really. CP rules really hurt Tyranids. Your options are limited. If you can pull the win, more power to you.
I'd call it the Skinnecktitty personally.
Alright, here is the update, we had to split the battle, but here are the momentary results, right now as is stands, at mid-field, his assasin (Callidus) and one Justicar, are engaged agaisnt two spinegaunts, the spinegaunts have distracted the one grey knight unit and the assasin, my genestealers died helping to kill the grey knights, before that, my warriors were attacked on both sides and fell beneath the assasin, but they put one wound on the it, decent. Meanwhile, my scythegaunts made thier way towards the stormtroopers, they killed both squads, two inquisitor squads. Problem is, the ONLY armament the one of the squads has is a plasma cannon, I need to get over to the combat and finish off the justicar and assasin but he could bomb me before I get their, not too bad. I will update you later.
Well, sorry this took so long, and I don;t know if anyone cares, but I did win the battle. My gaunts wiped up his Strom troopers, the warriors and genestealers all died fighting his justicar and his assasin. My gaunts saw to their vengeance, in the end, I had 8 gaunts left. Very close, turns out his plams cannon got hot and killed its bearer,
Grats on the win bro, sounds like a good game.
