I am starting to put together a Tau Army, and am asking for any ideas or pointers. I deal with people who play Chaos SM here, for the most part. Looking at an army of between 1000 and 1500 points. Thanks

Take lots of Firewarriors with Rifles. The firepower is much welcomed. You can have 6 squads of 12 bonded Firewarriors, with the Shas'ui, for 140 points each. That comes to 840 total. Which is more then enough for an HQ.

You just gotta take alot of Firewarriors. U gotta shoot them down before they close
4-5 squads of firewarriors 1 - 2 squads of kroot(if you think you can figure out good ways to use 'em otherwise take 6 firewarrior teams, i would definitel consider putting some in devilfish for extra mobility)
2 - 3 squads of stealth suit teams,
2-3 squads of gun drones(I wouldnt bother with pathfinders, since they are best used against tanks, most of the CSM players around here dont take 2 many of those, I would consider some HOUNDS as well)
2 hammerheads, your call on weapon configs
1 broadside squad OR... another hammerhead
Personally, if i were you my army would look like this (im going for 1500 points)
3 Crisis Suits
5 full squads of Firewarriors
1 full squad of 20 kroot
1 or 2 Hammerheads with Rail gun
and 1 - 2 squad of XV15s(dependent on how many hammerheads are taken)
I think that this list is under 1500, too lazy for the math
Tau - Knights of the Frozen Wastes
Necrons - The Phalanx of Gleaming Death
CSM - Iron Warriors

Take lots of fire warriors and railguns because Sm and chaos are tanky armys.
aim 4 as many fire warriors as the IG have men. have some anti-tank aswell
If it ain't broke, break it
Just be careful if you know any Slaaneshi players. Their guns outrange you pretty much without exception, which means when you try to do the "shoot them before they get to you" game, it won't work. AP 4 Blastmasters will make short work of your firewarriors before you even have a chance to respond, and the strength 8 will allow them to easily supress devilfish and hammerheads as well, if you're not careful, so delivering troops to the front lines will be tricky as well. This compounded by the fact that the Slaaneshi are still marines and will still guarantee the extinction of any firewarrior squad they end up in melee with means you have to not only manage to get firewarriors near them (close enough to be assaulted) but you have to do so in numbers great enough to wipe out entire squads.
It's no easy task, and those are just the basic troops I'm talking about. when one of those flying demon princes makes it to your lines, you're going to wish all you had to deal with was superiour firepower and 3+ saves...
