Sounds like you have a good start.
Buy yourself a Tau Battle Force.
This will get ya 3 Crisis Suits, 10 Gun Drones, 12 more FireWarriors, and 12 Kroot.
A mighty good deal for only $90us.
Stay away fomr kroot for the love of god. i hate them. do what he said but instead of the kroot get fire warriors. I cannot stress how important crisis suits are. They have saved my ass many a time. Crisis are an invaluable asset to any tau army. tha and lots of broadsides. We may suck at CC but they wont get close enough if you have crisis up front mowing them over and some broadsides and a hammerhead blowing them away.
Space Wolves: 3000+pts.
dark elves: work in progress
record:an ungodly amount of games i dont even know.

That's right, stay away from kroot because he hates them. <_< That's not a real reason. I've found kroot to be quite good in a lot of situations and very useful for their points cost. Broadsides are good, but I think you should balance them and hammerheads. Hammerheads are more resilient and better in multiple situations than broadsides are, so 2 hammerheads and a squad of broadsides is plenty. Crisis suits ARE useful, but don't overload on them. Take some stealth suits too.

I personally don't care for Kroot. They can dish out a decent amount of damage in HTH, but if they meet an enemy with higher initiative they're pretty much toast there too. Oddly, though, they have as much training with a gun as a fire warrior... Even in HTH, a fire warrior is saved a lot more by his good save compared to that of a Kroot (if it even exists...).
At this point I too would say more crisis suits. Give them at least a plasma rifle and they can hunt marines just fine. Well, they could hunt almost anything, really. Probably 3 at the most, any more and you're sinking too many points into them. Stealth suits are a nice alternative to keep the points in suits down, and they're just as mobile.
Also, full-sized squads are a nice thing to have (strength in numbers), so perhaps another fire warrior box would be in order. Just to fill out the existing squads, though.
Two hammerheads seems like overkill to me. You really don't need two heavy tanks like that until you get over 1500 points. The basic fire warrior, for his price, is a much better investment. Powerful gun for infranty, a pretty decent save, and let's face it, he would be hitting most opponents on 4's even if he did have a higher WS.
Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, even if it's wrong.
Gotta chime in on the kroot issue. Personally, I think that, as long as you come up with a good way to give them some protection from shooting (if you play with woods on the table, pretty much at all, this shouldn't be too difficult to do since they get that nice 4+ cover save in the woods) that they are exceptionally worth their 7 points. They are not bad at shooting--fairly close to the effectiveness of a firewarrior, in fact, and their melee skill is not only respectable from a game-wide perspective but manages to fill such a gaping hole in the Tau's ability to carry out a battle effectively that I can almost guarantee that you will be able to find a use for them. I field 16 in every game (that's 112 points, I never give them any upgrades, the upgrades are basically not worth it) and I have not once had them not more than make up for the meager amount I spent on them. At 7 points a pop, these guys are amazing.
That being said, don't fill your whole army with them-Masses of firewarriors will outperform masses of Kroot. Just bring a few Kroot to fill in the gaps, lend a little fire, and take care of those nasty assault troops that manage to make it through the hail of fire.
They provide a much needed roll to help alleaviates the greatest chink in the Tau's armour, close combat.
They arent as useless as people seem to think. They arent tough, no.. but they arent expensive either!
19 Kroot, 1 Shaper, and 8 Kroot Hounds, can desimate most enemy units!
You just have to use them right.
You shouldnt discount their shooting ability either. Stick them in woods, and you can shoot out at things that cant shoot in, and "Release the Hounds" helps GREATLY to counter the speed and higher innitiative of other units, effectively giving a Kroot squad an almost garanteed chance to massacre the enemy, even though your forced to consolidate.
