Can some one tell me the rules for using rail rifles?
Tau'n Expeditionary force:
PM me any fluff or pictures on the adeptus custodes you can find!!!!
I can tell you they are in Chapter approved 2004.
The enemies of the Emperor fear many things. They fear discovery, defeat, despair and death. Yet there is one thing they fear above all others. They fear the wrath of the Space Marines!
They can also be found in White Dwarf Issue 284.
They basicly provide a Pathfinder Squad with an additional Anti-Armor component. I like them... They give you something else to use to take out moderately tough stuff in the early game, while your Hammerhead(s) are focusing on other targets, as well as reducing the cost waste in the later turns of the game once all your seeker missiles are expended or rusting on vehicle wrecks.
Plus, its always nice to be able to pin Space Marines, something I find tough to do with Pulse Carbines.
I dont suggest using the Target Lock option for Rail Rifles, the risk of overheating and losing the figure, simply isnt worth the benefit of firing on another target. The odds are anyways, your going to need to fire all your Rail Rifles into your target unit, to be effective.
If I could bring all rail-rifle squads, I would do so. As it is, I don't use any pathfinders because I seldom find them to be worth their points. Maybe in a larger game (>1500 points) I'll give them another shot.
I used them once. I was very suprised. I was up against some SM army and on the left flank a squad of marines was moving up. I unloaded the pathfinders, and lets say: Pathfinder + rail rifle = dead marine. They are good marine killers, but when they get close, get back in the devilfish, otherwise: space marine + cc = dead Tau. They might be hard to use, but when used correctly, they are killing machines. Just move up, unload, shoot the crap out of 'em, load up, move back, unload, repeat.
The only thing that is stopping you from being what you can be is what you think other people think about you.
If you could say one thing to the world, what would it be?
I like markerlights and i tend to overuse them. I know it really puts them in danger, but it does slow down the enemy sometimes. One squad of pathfinders with railrifles and the other squad with pulse carbines.
What lies at the bottomless gulf between the soul and the heart?
I personally have never used railrifles, but they sound like they woul dbe dead helpful. Say a squad of nobz is getting dangerously close to your firing lines. Use the railrifles to pin em down, and the rest of the squads markerlights to light them up for your stealth suits (you DO have stealth suits right?). Many many shots with 2+ to hit. Good fun. I'm gonna have to get some pathfinders soon.
Don't look now... But there's one man too many in this room and I think it's you.

Im surprised I havent seen more options available for the Tau including maybe a Heavy Support Firewarrior Team armed with Rail Rifles, or maybe one guy per Firewarrior Squad to have a Rail Rifle.
A 4-8 Tau FW Squad with Rail Rifles would make a decent HVY choice. I would GLADLY trade the Krootox in for that.
Just got my first two Pathfinders with Rail rifles today. I'm kinda wondering just how many of these things you can take in a squad? Chapter Approved 2004, just got that today also, doesn't seem to give any restrictions. Could I use 8 rail rifle toting Pathfinders in a single squad?
If they work the way they should, the Black Templars (usual SM foe), will be quite amazed at the increase of firepower from the lowly scouts. The Orks and 'Nids (other usual opponents) are already afraid of them. Yeah, two weapons at Str 6 and 6 seeker missiles should make short work of the best Space Marine squad.
I usually run a full squad of them right up to the best cover I can get. What really suprises the enemy is when I charge with them. They've got the same armor save as everyone else, plus they get the extra attack and assault weapons. EMP grenades are a great surprise to enemy armor. No one expects thier Land Raider to be taken out by foot slogging scouts.
