I've been going back and forth on either spiders or banshees for my alaitoc army. At first I had Spiders on the list, but the more I think a out it the more I think Banshees may make more sense.
I have a lot of ranged weapons that can cut through good armor saves, but the spiders are expensive point wise and there is always that chance they nay get swallowed up during the second jump during the assault phase.
Anyways, the Banshees have fleet of foot, so they can move pretty hast as well and they seem to so very well on the first round of combat, especially against Marines.
I need to know relatively quickly which way you would go since I am buying them tomorrow.
The spiders or Banshees will make it my fourth CC unit for my Alaitc on an 1850 list. Keep in mind that I am primarily shoot and I need something to tie up then enemy in CC if enemies start getting too close to my Rangers and other ranged units and vehicles.

What are the other 3 CC units? I always prefer banshees though... power weapons, better models.

Anyway i think that scorps are the best way to go, they have a better save, can infiltrate to get in to combat quickly and since they have a higher strength they can hurt toughness 6 enemies unlike banshees. If u really want to get either spiders or banshees though go for banshees but it's best to put banshees in a wave serpent with holofield and spirit stone to make sure they can get into combat quickly. Banshees dominate in close combat and that what i would use in an alaitoc army.
I'd have to go with Spiders. Horde armies are the achilles heel of Alaitoc, and spiders can decimate orks/tyranids. Banshees are great against heavily armored opponents, but so are rangers/pathfinders. Additionally Spiders can tank hunt in a pinch, something Alaitoc needs.
IMO, Spiders fit the bill in the two categories that Alaitoc need help in; anti-horde and anti-tank. Banshees do more of what Alaitoc is already good at, namely killing low model count, heavily armored opponents.
For the record, I'd take scorpions over banshees anyhow, for the same reasons as above.
Note: strength 3 wounds toughness 6 on a roll of 6, just as strength 4 does.
Note2: waveserpents can't take holofields
Thanks for that Sevytha i never realised Wave Serpents couldn't have Holo fields (which really sucks but i'll get by) this doesn't make them as indestructible as i thought they where. Also thanks for telling me about the S 3 thing i just assumed that if S 4 can't hurt T 8 and S 5 can't hurt T10 then i thought S 3 couldn't hurt T 6 silly me oh well.

Yeah, the S3 does really hurt the banshees, but then again, there is always the exarch to give us some kills as well. Looks like I will stick with the spiders even though I can field less of them because they are so expensive. As far as the tank killing goes for the Spiders, since their weapon has no AP isn't true that since thet have no AP they can only glance?

If you look at the Vehicle rules section on shooting vehicles there is a topic about AP1 weapons hitting vehicles and there is another topic about AP- hitting vehicles. It explains that AP1 hits are always consindered penetrating even if the armor value is matched and that if an AP- scores a hit it is always considered a glance do to the non penetrating nature of the weapon.
Can anyone else comment? I'm leaving in 2 hours to buy some figures for my army...
If you already have scorpions, i then say buy the spiders.
