I was thinking last night about different ways to use Pathfinders.
How about this idea..........?

Instead of setting up your Pathfinders as a forward disruptive firebase, why not put them in with your main FW firebase, to add more heavier firepower. With the addition of the new Rail Rifle (which comes out tomorrow, and yes AM getting some!!&#33 this makes a little more sense. (Since you have a limited supply of Seeker Missles)

Has anyone tried this tactic?

Does it work?

as far as I know, pathfinders use, pulse carbines, so they are only gonna reach out 18" for one, then ull have like only a few railrifle shots, so basically what this would kinda be like, would be like the eldar using support weapon platforms for the guardians, since there are only a few shots that would be effective from the pathfinders, unless one has a markerlight....

Mad Props to Angel_of_Rust for the sig.

Similar to a posting in another forum thread; the most efficient way to use the Rail Rifles is to use a small 4-model unit of Pathfinders, 1 Shas'ui and 3 Rail Rifles. Now, whether you use them as forward scouts or deploy them with your FireWarrior troop squads you're not wasting any points on extra non-Rail Rifle equipped models. However, now you have a much harder chance to light up a target for a Seeker missile.

It will take some advice.

Later,
Jon

But having extra men in a squad means your rail rifles will stick around a little longer probably especially if your going to have them go forward. Four man squads would probably work really well as support to other squads. Just my own thought though.

You could put the small 4 man railrifle teams behind you firewarriors to keep them alive and hav a very effective base of fire. Probably not too bad of a tactic to us against marines. Also you could put them behind your kroot squad but infront of your fire warrior squad and advance forward with that.

This tactic sounds kind of off, as the Pathfinders all have short range, even the Railrifles don't shoot that far.....But forward scouts make more sense.....giving them a better chance at killing the incoming enemy with Seeker Missles/MarkerLighting for other stronger unit......

ditto.

6" range advantage over the pulse carbine, minus a few inches because they're behind the FWs, and since they're with the FWs they'll have to be deployed somewhere towards the back on your side of the table. Not really worth the points imho.

You *HAVE* to buy the devilfish, so if you just put the pathfinders with the rest of your army, you're wasting that devilfish, which can *not* be used to transport any other units. That's 80 pts for a burst cannon and some gun drones,

Also, with the pathfinders hidden in your deployment zone, the enemy can use all of the things you'd normally be markerlighting safely, as the pathfinders wont be able to reach the enemy tanks and such that are all armed with 48" weapons.

Finally, with the pathfinders back in your area, they'll be alot easier to avoid. If you move them forward you can put them in a posistion of power and control an important part of the battlefield, thus helping to control enemy maneuvers. If you stash em in your zone the enemy may just keep an eye on them and try to stay out of LOS from that one unit, alot easier to do when they're hiding so much further back.

That's just the way I see it.

I admit that at 22 points a model, and with only T3 and a 4+ save, rail rifle pathfinders need protection, but I don't think stashing em in the rear would pay off.

Note that I'm not so sure they're a good investment at all yet, so you can consider me the Scrooge for purposes of this discussion.

Its an interesting idea, but I would not do it. You can give your firewarriors markerlights if you really need them. As I've been trying to tell people, railrifles should not be considered a reason to play pathfinders. Yes, if you're going to play pathfinders, you might want to add them in. But remember, YOU CAN FIELD CRISIS SUITS. Anything that str 6 ap 3 heavy 1 can do, a str 6 ap 2 rapid fire (+recoil absorption) can do better, especially when it does nto come with a big vehicle that you don't sound like you're going to use.

But other than that, its a great idea! (If it didn't come with a devilfish, I'd actually do it)
