Welcome to Librarium Online!
My friend has just started 40K as well as I but he started a little late and he decided to go with the Tau. The first boxed set he got was Kroot carnivore pack. We played a small game and saw them ripped apart really easily. Now hes going, on about how weak they are, anyone have advice/tactics on making his kroot more useful? I told him about how needs a shaper and hounds and everything
but he still things they suck.( personally I dont think he should have gotten kroot as his first boxed set as they are meant to supplement a Tau force to begin with?)
Also i was wondering if kroot can move 12" for some reason i think i heard they can move 12" somwere....just wondering...
Kroot are great if you use them right. first of all a Kroot out in the open is a dead Kroot. Put them in the woods or something where they're actualy useful. you can't play with Kroots like you would with Necrons or space Marines or something, you gotta think about what you're doing.I'm not to great with Kroot tatcics since my Tau army is Kroot-less, but maybe if you tell us how he used them we can decide what went wrong.
It was his first game and he ran right infront of my Necrons firing line(with 16 kroot) and tried to outshoot them(12 Necron warriors)
Anyway, now he says hes just gonna get the rest tau and use the kroot he has as meat shields...
If only there were such a thing as meat shields still.....Anyway, now he says hes just gonna get the rest tau and use the kroot he has as meat shields...
Anyway, kroot are a support unit. You dont use them to actively charge the enemy, you use them to liberate squads who got caught in CC.

Well, the basic Necron warrior is one of the toughest infantry availiable to xenos players. So measly Kroot (even though they are really cool) won't stand up really well in firefights against them, even if your playing a scenario without ranged weapons. He should try to keep them out of LOS, and use cover as much as possible.

Well Necrons are a very tough opponent for tau, which I suspect TauMaster will be attesting to sometime today or tomorrow
Anyways, as far as employing kroot, everyone has the basic idea, stick to cover, and really know where you are going with them. I really wouldn't suggest them as a starting point for a rookie.
That said, they are a great unit, 7 points for effectively a bolter infantry unit, plus if there are trees you get a 4+ cover save. Hounds really complement their effectiveness in CC.
For tactics, its all about terrain, deploy the kroot either in reserve behind your army, or out ahead, not too far, but always behind cover. Use them to tie down or harrass an enemy flank while your tau work over the other side.
Oh, and as far as Kroot moving 12, as far as you should be concerned, the answer is no.
Now, for an entirely separte army, Kroot Mercenaries, which can not be used with Tau, the answer is a dependent yes, Kroot with wings, Hyperactive Nymune on a roll of a 6, or Kroot Trackers can move 12 inches, but then, all you Tau players shouldnt bother thinking about that.
Well thanks for the advice guys but I just got off the phone with him and after a larg diuscussion (almost an hour) he decided to switch to space marines..... SPACE MARINES!!!!! bring on the pain.....
for some reason I have bad feeling about fighting them... but thanks anyways the advice you gave was good
Space marines are a much better beginners army than Tau. ('course I started with Tau, and that was only like 4 months ago, but it's different, I'm a tactical genius)
using kroots you need a full squad of them if u buy a carnivore squad take out a few and fill them up with hounds like if you got 13 krrots like me id use 6 hounds and a krootox and maybee take out 1 more kroot and buy shaper with pusle carbine and put them in the woods and you'd be able to kill nearly everthing in close combat unless your vering genstealer
LeArN HoW To lOsE BeFoRe YoU LeArN TO WiN
hell, if he's switchin' to marines, how much does he want for the kroot?
i'm in drunkenkrootmode these days. love those little suckers.
