Welcome to Librarium Online!
I just used my winged hive tyrant yesterday, and while it survived with two wounds against amazing odds (survived 4 power fist termies in combat and a force commander with power weapon! it seemed if my opponent was a little bit better the thing would have died very easily...
In the first turn it was shot by a predator, this took off 2 wounds, in the second the predator aimed elsewhere. If it had fired again it would have killed the tyrant easily with nothing I could do about it. My slow tyrant has guard so he is fine, but guard can't keep up with this one and it could just get blasted way too easily. How can you possibly save this? Nothing is fast enough to engage the enemy in time, and even if a fex got lucky and destroyed the predator there are other lascannons in the army. It seems the winged tyrant is a huge, fast thing so is a prime target for weapons which kill him...
keep the ht in close combat all the time. if possible deep strike near the predator and warpblast it.
maybe use cheap cc warriors as bait (could work similar to guards vs weak players)
killing those powerfists sounds awesome.. something i try to keep my hive tyrant away from
Winged tyrants are good ans expensive, so keep them in cover or close combat at all times. Basicly, what he said.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'> They will shoot you and cut you up and step on the pieces and burn them and assemble the ashes and shoot them again and grind them into sand and scatter the sand into the sea and boil the sea away and gather the hardened remains and melt them into a rock and shoot the rock and burn what's left and launch the remains into the sun and...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>The most powerful gun in the galaxy won't help if your opponent if bashing your brains out with a rock</div>
you're supposed to keep them out of los
i know sometimes its tricky because your opponent refuses to put terrain down...
once (3rd edition) there was barely any terrain and i was allied with eldar so walked it up behind a falcon for 3 turns (how long it took to get to cc as the board was huge).
I noticed that same thing. You may be better off just Deep striking your Tyrant so he isn't a target in the first couple of turns. I haven't tried it but it seems like one way around it.
Hopefully, the new codex will make the Hive Tyrant again the cc monster it is supposed to be, come on, it gets beaten by just about any other HQ out there.
Just any model with a power weapon or ap 2 weapon can rip a tyrant to shreds. But yeah, either keep the tyrant out of los, or get into cc as soona s possible.

The winged hive tyrant, is mobile enough to find cover and stick to it, meaning nice cover saves, when lascannon shots gets fired at it, my usual game plan includes deploying both my Winged tyrants in cover or out of sight, on first turn the fly out and get behind some cover giving fire support with warpblasts and usualy one or both of of them is able to survive the torrent of heavy weapons fire. On the second turn, these guys are usually in in range to get into CC along side all my leaping gaunts
Another Expensive tactic, if ppl are shooting your Winged hivetyrant with 8 or 9 lascannons, before its gets to move and you dont have much cover to play on is give the Tyrant some Guard, yes ok for the first turn it may only move 6 with the rest of the guard..but then Again after the first turn it should be in range to fly away from the guard and assualt into CC, (this tactic has been pointed out before) also then the guard can join up with any lone carnifex's and guard them as they lumber up the table. I wouldnt do this in any normal game, but i have played imperial guard armies that uberd up to kill nids and i had to start resorting to this tactic against a certain player who only took nothing but lascannons against me....You know who you Are !!!!
Army of the heavens, my army waits in hell

He dies often but I think its more of a "god I hate that thing" attitude than him being weak. Hard to hide them if they can't enter terrain. Honestly the only time he dies in in CC to Power Fists, and sometimes I can't avoid the situation. I, and probably many people, use him off to the side to herd squad around into the center for the other Tyrant. Being alone like that because of his placement and movement means he's going to get hit.
Way I think of it is if you want to waste shots/cc squad or two on him fine. My other Tyrant with 3 Guard are way more nasty in cc and now they'll probably make it there unhindered.
Don't ever be afraid of run him the opposite direction to hide behind something. He's we'll under 200 points, but I'm not going to be silly about charging across open ground. Watch for someone to commit guns/tanks in his diection. If they are ready for you, hit the brakes and wait.
