Theoretically, a winged Hive Tyrant will never be within range for the IG to rapid fire, since he can move farther then they can rapid fire. Also, by giving your guys extended carapace, you can greatly increase their survivability (unless you only roll ones, like me). You can also get Tyrant Guard and use them as ablative armor.

But the best way to stop an army from shooting at you is to tie them up in close combat, which is what your gaunts and ripper swarms are for.

take a winged tyrant (if there isnt alot of difficult terrain) and 3 tyrant guard for it and then take a second hq choice of three guard aswell as 2 carnifex. you can move to tyrant out of its guard unit and go kill tanks with it then move a carnifex into each unit of tyrant guard and walk them up front for alittle smashy smashy on some tin cans.

warriors with VC will make a mess out of sometanks they can only score glancing hits but they get 2 shots each so the odds arnt to bad. as well genestealers with mess up a tank and if you have 3-3biovores they will make a mess out off anythign thats not in a tank. and if you have someone who uses lots of little heavy weapon teams and hids them in the back. deep strike some gargoyles they will screw up guardsman, elder and ork weapon teams just left in the back.

I am guessing that you are fighting a load of squads with lasguns and also a number of armored vehicles. He is using mortars and Earthshaker's to make you miserable. Here are your buddies:

Tyrants are great with wings, but expensive. However, seeing a Tyrant move 18" and assault in 1 turn is pretty funny (at least, the look on the other guy's face is). If you are worried about the opening shots, you can take Tyrant Guard and either ditch them or make your winged dash once they are dead.

A Carnifex with a barbed strangler can put a really big hole into a fat platoon of IG. He can also shrug off lots of lasgun fire if you take the extended carapace (you should, for both him, the Tyrant, and Warriors). Heck, the barbed even does well at killing tanks except for Land Raiders and others with heavy armor. That is what his scything talons are for.

There are usually 3 types of Warriors I like: Winged, leaping, and then cheap as I can make them. The winged and leapers are outfitted to maximize hand to hand damage, including using rending claws on some models. Devourer's work pretty darn good against IG on these. The cheapies usually run me about 25 points, which is not bad for WS 4, S 4, T 4, W 2, A 3, Sv 4+ and a synapse creature.

Limit the sizes of your broods to make them easier to move and less of a target for the IG's template weapons. I would bet 18 is going to be the max you want. Use Hive Nodes. Use Hive Nodes. Use Hive Nodes (you get the idea). If you do have a large brood, do not make it a solid mass - create a thin ribbon.

I would think hard about Genestealers. They are awesome troops in hand to hand, but you have to wade through a hail of fire and they do poorly at that. Buying a chunk of Horms that can move 19 - 24 inches in a turn might be better and IG do not want to melee you anyway.

Biovore's with frag spores are actually pretty effective against troopy IG armies.

Deploy smart, use cover, and, if you are going to make a mad dash across open ground, try to do it as a rushing wall of 'Nids. I have put off starting my big assault push for a turn, just to make sure every unit is coming at the other guy at the same time. They cannot shoot them all. Especially not when you have about 80 models, some of them big Tyranids, rushing.

try to be in cover, leaping and fleet of claw are your best friends there is a great chance that you can make it there in your first turn. Barbed Strangler on a fex or even a tyrant may kill a few IG seeing that they have a save of +5 or +4 if they are using the new codex and chose that doctine. Thinking abotu it a Venom Cannon will be str 10 or so on them so thats instant death so they get no saves. Infiltete with stealers if you have and the rule is allowed. And you must field biovores. Ive seen a nid player win because he spored most of the heavy weapons.

Um... actually its the AP 4 of the VC that would prevent the saves, not the strength of the weapon. Instant Death is only a factor with multiwound creatures and only if they fail (or can't take) their save for other reasons.

But Biovores do rock, and the poison mines auto glance open topped vehicles (which I believe Basilisks are).

Nope I think giffions are open topped. I forgot it was a auto glance for open topped that sucks for ork's buggies. Anyway to sum things up if you play smart you can rip a new ***** to IG
