To answer your question, the reason people often put BC's on their Hammerheads is due to the range mis-match between SMS and the primary weapons. If you're at the back of the board taking advantage of the 60" or 72" range of your primary weapon, you won't often be within 24" or 18" to shoot your secondary. Therefore, since you're never going to shoot it, may as well save the 10 points and go with the cheaper option (since you have to have a secondary weapon).

I love the rail gun(come on, who doesn't?) with bursts. The bursts get 6, 5+ or 6+ armor shredding shots. They might not be used very often, but for their points, it's my pick.
Anyway, wuz-up TOnka! I haven't talked to you in ages. We really need your council in 'Our Mechanized Forces'. Necrons are a pain!
The only thing that is stopping you from being what you can be is what you think other people think about you.

Personaly, I've used all of them. If you want to go for maximum firepower, then the Burst Cannon is your best bet for your secondary weapon. But if you like to hide your tanks behind terrain the go with the SMS.

And as for the primary weapon:

    Railgun:
pros: S10 AP1, Longer Range (doesn't really matter in most casses), Submunitions pwnz everything but 3+ armor save
    cons: hit or miss.

    Ion Cannon:
pros: 3 Shots, nukes 3+ saves, can still take out all but armor 14, more chances to hit with it, 20 points cheaper.
cons: not as reliable for armor penetration, against swarm armies, you'll miss that template (when your opponet foolishly clumps together his troops)

I'd have to say it's a toss up. Each gun does different things and should be played accordingly.
There once was a Lord named Vlad,
Who's fighting skillz really were mad.
    He killed and he maimed,
He spilled blood in Khorne's name.
And the fact that he's legal makes me glad
(special thanks to Uriel Zarium for the last line/touching it up)

    depends who your versing

    railgun:
army with lots of Sm Scouts
tyranids with submunition no armour saves and can kill swarms of them
eldar heavey tanks(solid shot) and guardians(submunition)
dark eldar same thing as above
imperial guards there troops submunition and vehicles with soilid shot

    ion cannon:
    marines mostly
necrons becasue you had to use 1 rail gun per turn to kill a necron killl 3 at a time and let them do there wbw rolls and theres a good change of failing
    witchhunters
    daemon hunters

for termies just rely on your suits with plasma rifle

Personally, I love my Hammerheads, and I like to have of each. I have one Hammerhead loaded out with a Railgun and SMS (long range), one loaded out with Ion Cannon and busrst cannons. This can really take almost all comers. THe only time I'd change it really is I'd drop Ion Cannon versus IG, just no targets for it. Even vs tyranids the Ion cannon is very often good against the TMCs, guards, exposed lictors, ravenors and warriors.

A hammer head can either use the solid shot or the subulition (however you spell it), broudsides are the ones that can only use solid shot, hammer head can use either.
