Welcome to Librarium Online!
i think gargoyles are too weak, raveners are too expensive and die so fast, warriors are a bit expensive as well and zoanthropes have a low wb and are a weak choice as heavy support.after all is any of these creatures worthy?
Gargoyles: As weak as Your average Gaunt... Their additional weakness is that they can't enter terrain.
However, they can be useful in supporting Leaping Gaunts and cost pretty much equal points thus being cheap enough to lose, making them quite the deal for the points spent!
Raveners: True, at the moment Leaping Warriors are more effective for less points... But according to Rumours, Raveners will get a boost in the 4thEd Tyranid Codex.
Warriors: They will always remain a bit expensive compared to their survivability (or lack of it), but they can be a fairly effective choice for extra Synapse. According to rumours, these too will be made better.
Zoanthropes: Can be useful against SM/CSM/Necron armies, and can provide nasty ranged medium-range support against others as well. Of course, they hit only 50% of the time... But that's a risk one has to take when fielding 'Thropes.
Also, they aren't that weak... They're surprisingly tough considering they're sedentary psyker creatures! Just don't let it get hit by anything which would negate the Armour save!
Every Tyranid does have its uses, it's just that most people go primarily for efficiency, and some choices are clearly more cost-effective than others.
"The meat things seek to destroy ourselves. They hunt us as we hunt them but they are weak and uncertain. The inferior flesh will be entirely destroyed, all biomatter consumed. Ourselves will fight to the last, all weak flesh must be devoured."
don't worry, they'll fix the imbalance with the new codex.
Take my words with a grain of salt, i am not the tactical genius i think i am!
In my army, I field all of them and there's nothing wrong with any of them. Only is some battles will a specific species fail me. That usually tends to be the Zoanthrope and Raveners.
The Codex makes the Ravener seem so fast but it only moves 9" and assaults 9" (only  ). Compared to the Eldar's Fast Vehichles, its nothing! Because they don't have FoC, they can't sneak into cover after their move, meaning that if they fell short just once, it could spell disaster. I mostly play against tau and the Stealth Suit's Burst Cannon can fire many numerous shots which wound Raveners easily. Even if they do get into close combat, their low save can fail them when hits get through.
The Zoanthropes are basically a shooty unit. They move and fire, move and fire but don't move and assault. Because their BS is only 3, they will miss half the time which is mostly the case. If they do hit, you hit a unit within 24" which is the bolter's firing range. If your gaunts aren't in close combat by now, they're dead and the games up. If they are, you can't really shoot them or anything behind them. The blast is great when it hits, with S5 AP3 Blast it can hit 3 space marines and wound 2 of them with no armour saves. Warp Blast is the only isntant tank-hunting weapon with Str.10 AP2 and no glancing/penetrating restrictions (like the Venom Cannon). This is only 18", so by this time the Zoanthropes have either been assaulted or gunned down by plasma weapons.
Although the two species fail me, most of the time they lead my Tyranid army to its victory! The Raveners can catch a squad and hold it in close combat for at least 2 turns which is enough for the gaunts to come. Mine have no guns, just Scything Talons and Rending Claws, which can devestate even the tough Space Marines.
I often take 3 Zoanthropes because that almost always means at least 1 hit per turn. This one hit is a strong Str. 5 AP 3 Blast! That can kill a group of models at once! The 24" shot is descent for Tyranids.
With the other units, I find them usefull for every game I play. The Gargoyles are fast models which should tie up Heavy Weapon squads ASAP. The Warriors are essential and with their Extended Carapace, they can survive bolters! You must have them in your army because if you don't your gaunts are lost. They also do loads of damage with their Venom Cannons, Deathspitters and Close Combat Weapons.
