Ok well I tried playing my first game ever against a buddy of mine who just started playing Necrons.

For one of my troop choices I brought 5 Rangers. probably not something you'd ever recomend against a Necron army but at any rate I don't have two units of Guardians yet so I needed the troop choice.

But I figured a sniper unit would be able to at least take out his scarab swarms.
Well I found them to be completely useless.

They inflicted 1 wound on one swarm.
I know they always hit on 2 plus and always wound on 4+ but do people still get there saves etc?

Or am I missing something that makes them pretty decent?

EDIT: Please keep in mind this was my first game ever, and it was also my oponents first game ever so I imagine we forgot or missed a good number of rules that may contribute to the usefulness of a Ranger.

you know why snipers wound on a 4+ always?

its because the unit's toughness is the str, of the hit from the rifle.

only use rifles against tough guys, or low morale units.

i'd only use it against the ctan, imo

Rangers carry Ranger Long Rifles, not Sniper Rifles. RLR are slightly better because any to hit rolls of 6 will ignore armour saves (otherwise they're the same as sniper rifles).

It's a matter of opinion, but at 19 points I feel that they're rarely worth it. Aliatoc armies are obvious exceptions to this and they're good if you facing high toughness monsters (eg. wraithlords). They also good against low leadership armies because they can pin them.

I really like Rangers and often use a squad of 3-5 of them. They can be very useful, killing stuff here and there, and pinning squads and killing wraithlords or terminators. They are also very well proctected if you deploy them in ruins, as they have a 3+ cover save there.

You never use rangers against low tougness hoardes. They would work better against the actual warriors or like said c'tan. Good against orks....high toughnes, very low save and low leadership. And the AP1 can take out mega nobs. Not that its relevant to necrons.
Well those are my pointless ramblings on the subject anyway....

I use 1 out of 3 batlles at least 1 ranger force.
The reason . . . .Anti-infiltrating tactic. I dont think much ppl know wat this is because I ''discovered'' it myself. If you are playing vs a infiltrating army or a army that has some mean infiltrators. (alaitoc tyranids genes etc) And you roll to go first then I deploy them so that there ''range'' of 18 inch (That is needed to infiltrate from a unit or 12 out los) covers alot of the terrain meaning that often alaitoc at our gaming club stands on the open ^^. If not then I take the second best spot. I use them in groups of 3 you dont need to expect miracles but sometimes there usefull.

I have deployed my rangers perfectly in one batlle making the opponent infiltrating in his own deployment zone. Anyway after they are deployed I ussaly shoot on large high T creatures il give you a list so you know wat to shoot at:

Eldar:Wraithlords
Dark eldar:Talos
Orksont have experience against them with rangers
Tyranids:Carnifexes hive tyrants etc
IG:heavy weapon platoon thingies (Worked always well for me)
Space marinesevestator squads
CSM:Havoc launcher squads big deamons
Tau:Broadsides
Necrons:C'tans

I would not use them that much against IG necrons SM and orks they dont really got that high T arget that you want to shoot at. Anyway imo rangers are 9 out of 10 times worth there points. I have played batlles and my rangers were completly ignored the whole batlle long untill I shot my opponent 225 pts hive tyrant and his carnifex. After that he was kinda pissed and 20 genes swarmed over my 57 pts squad .

However with that statement out of the way, I would say listen to ArchonBjorn. He has a really good tendency to not say stupid things and give bad advice.

The problem is that rangers against scarabs are absolutely useless. They turn warriors into confetti, and here they were attacking roombas....

Your right about not using rangers against necrons that was a bad ides but try not to aim for the scarabs have a crack at the better armour saves its what the rangers are for and Rangers can be really cool if you use them properly espicially if you infiltrate them

So aiming the rangers at my friend Necron Lord would be a much better idea?

I have to take them since they are the only other core choice I have right now

Anyways at the time I had forgotten they will get an AP1 if you roll a 6.

Hmmm... well if I had done that and managed to kill the Lord it would have been much more helpful then the stupid scarabs. Thanks guys

What about using them against things like Tau Broadside suits? my brother has one for his HQ choice for his tau army? would they be very effectuve in killing off that thing or does some different rules apply?

They would be good for taking out a broadside in my opinion. Could you tell us what your Necron friend is using so we can tell you what to aim at since all you have to use is rangers right now. It would be very helpful.
