Hello, I have won many a battle against the Necrons, (3 wins/1 lose) Space marines (4/0), and the Eldar (2/2). But the Bug menace has won against me every time (7 losses), I cannot defeat them, in small point games (500/750) the two tyranid players love to use Hormies and Spinegaunts, fleeting, leaping, shooting (thoughe not as good), and even when I can keep his guants under control, the HQ (Tyrant with V. Cannon, Scything talons, 2 guards with Lash whips and Spine shields) Can Whip up on my troops, Gun drone sqauds, then attack the HQ.
I have tried mobile armies, Shooty armies, a Mechanised army once, and each and every time, I got crushed outright. Now in a 750 pt. tourney, (see army list forum) A Tyranid player uses the one Special unit I hate to fight, Old one eye. I know I should concentrate fire upon him, but then the gaunts would come and massacre my firing line, and If I shoot the gaunts, One eye will just come up and be unstoppable. I see no way to win against that player.
Can anyone help at all with this dilemma?
well if you think about it tyranids are the only ones who are only gonna want to go CC with you, so if you use some kroots they will get in CC and do pretty well. Also you might want to go quantity over quality... Unless you want to add something in that you are sure will kill many troops like ordanance blast, but there isnt alot of that in tau.
Also there has been rumor that they might get rid of old one eye in the new codex, so sorry to say **for tyranids** your in luck. But gaunts would never ever kill a tank or something so tanks should always focus on the big stuff. And you shouldnt attack the old one eye at all, if hes just gonna heal when you dont focus all your power.

I actually have a slug living in YOU, right now...
Slowly will start playing: Iyanden, and Chaos.
use allot of fire warriors to thin down is troops, the get your HQ suit and bodyguard whiting rapid fire range of plasma guns and jump back in assault, keep on moving backwards until you shot him down completely. And is you missjudge the distance, reform the fire warriors to get fire to the tyrant after they have killed the gaunts. using devilfish to block charge range helps alot too, by unattatching the drones to the sides gets you another round of shooting. If he gets too close, don't be scared to move up the fire warriors to rapid fire is gaunts, or even charge them. better you getting +1A then him IMO.
My advice would be similar to that of Wolf_Pack: Use firewarriors to gun down gaunts, and have your suits equipped with TL plasma for frying the big bugs and a burst cannon incase they have to help thin the gaunts.
The enemies of the Emperor fear many things. They fear discovery, defeat, despair and death. Yet there is one thing they fear above all others. They fear the wrath of the Space Marines!
Again, I have to say Brodsides really makes up for their points... If he has atleast 1 Fex and 1 Tyrant then don't lack heavy fire fower. The plasma may have good Armor pen but against a Fex or Tyrant their strength is kinda low and hardly ever wounds, it only has about 50% chanse and they have 4 wounds each. Use Railguns to make sure thoose big ass buggs won't get far. (though you might need some crisis to give them a little "kick", or to lure them out in the open using deep strike.
Also use the Hammerhead gainst Gaunts and Warriors wich probably leaps hand in hand since they need the synapse power to not go balistic. (always aim for the big ones). When or if they get near just finish them with the SmartMissile Systems and a troop of Firewarriors.
Genestealers often Infiltrate to get near their enemy so you always need to focus you firepower on them first. Firewarriors and SMS's is perfect for this purpuse. (The same for Lictors.)
If possible use a squad of XV15 suits (stealth) and deepstrike into position and burst some of those Gaunts down before they make any real threat to your army.
Though you don't own a Hammerhead, neither Brodsides... GET ALTLEAST one of each. And never take Kroot instead of Tau... you need that firepower against 'nids which Kroot lacks. Besides kroot is kinda useless 'gainst 'nids since 'nids have higher initiative and therefor strike first.
And remember, ALWAYS keap atleast 15" distance from 'Nids using jetpacks, they kinda' like CC ^_^ , and another 6" if Hormagounts or Warriors for possible leaping and fleat of claw abilities.
Remember remember the fifth of November... Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason... Should ever be forgot...- = Always watching = -
--- Kill the Gaunts first, since they pose a much bigger threat due to their speed.Originally posted by Portent visions@Feb 7 2005, 05:29

If possible, totally ignore OOE... It is slow and purely CC. If it's getting too close, feed it something relatively cheap to enable the rest of Your army retreat a bit and allow for an additional turn of shooting against the OOE.
This assuming that OOE and Gaunts are the main annoyances.
