I was wondering, can hammerheads compete with broadsides? I mean 3 twin linked shots versus one but a better BS? what do you guys reckon?
The avatar is the emperor as a pimp. Well, i like it.
well the main difference is that the hammerheads railgun is anti tank/heavy infantry and has a ordance that is great vs swarm armys.
plus that is has the ability to move and shot. and if you equip it properly it can move 12" and shot that railgun. and with a high front army value its rather hard to take out.
in my case it was the money that mad eme choose the hammerhead istead of the XV88. i think a tank is more worth those 30€ a xv88 costs 25€ here in sweden. and i only get 95€/month
It depends on a lot of factors, not the least of which is the amount and type of terrain that you normally play on. In heavy terrain environments, it's hard to set up with clear LoS to your opponent and therefore the ability to move and shoot is much more valuable.
Furthermore, the cost isn't as straight as you make it seem. Without drone protection, 3 Broadsides are a juicy LasCannon target and die easily. You'll need 6 Shield drones to protect them which will run you an additional 60 points.
Hammerheads are better. On average. Of course you would prefer a couple of twin linked railgun shots if you really needed them, but I believe the Hammerhead is stronger defensively and much more versatile offensively. Your opponent can easily abuse the fact that Broadsides can't move and shoot.
i agree that it does really depend on what type of terrain your playing on, but i personally prefer broadsides. three twin linked railgun shots with a smart missile system. can easily wipe the floor with just about anything, especially if helped with pathfinders. the hammerhead is nice, but only works really well against swarm armies and i don't play against many of them.
I shall destroy all who stand in my way. The Emperor shall be reborn in me, the Primarchs shall be remade in me. I shall cast down the Dark Gods, the Star Gods shall be consumed just as they consumed their brothers. Those who fell shall be redeemed, those who remained pure shall be rewarded. The Imperium shall regain its power and the Dark Age of Technology will seem like nothing. For I am the Numen and I am coming
but you dont always see the terrain before you write the army list.
I'm getting tired of "is this better than this" threads...the answer is: in some cases, one is better than the other and vice versa.Originally posted by willysnow@Feb 25 2005, 07:55

First of all, you can't compare 3 Broadsides to a Hammerhead - they aren't equal points.
Compare roughly 2 Broadsides and a Hammerhead. In my opinion, they are balanced. You get two more accurate shots vs. the single Hammerhead's shot, which has in turn submunitions.
You get the durability of a heavy infantry model vs. the heavy AV of the HH.
You aren't targetted as much as an infantry model vs. being able to move as the tank.
(This is being due to the fact that tanks are able to be targetted without taking a LD check, unless another vehicle is in front of them.)
You also just get more weapons vs. the Hammerhead's weapon capabilities. You get 2 railguns, 2 plasma/SMS, and can take shield generators, drones, etc.
I believe this question is just answered by yourself: do you want a durable infantry stand-and-shoot Railgun unit or do you want a durable tank float around Railgun?

Welcome to the frustrating world of internet forums...
Considering your main opponents are me (necrons ) and a space marine player, i'd think that broadsides would be the better choice. Especially when you consider mr space marine (you know who i mean will ) for some reason never moves his tactical squads more than 15 inches every game, broadsides might be better.
'course not that i wont be able to kill your broadsides......

I love both but realise that the best use is them combined. Broadsides do my heavy anti-tank and with gun drones in cover they can last forever encouraging the enemy to walk towards them and into the loving embrace of pulse weopons. In the hammerheads favour, with a markerlight it hits more than a single broadside and as my primary opponent favours Guard with close order drill I love submunitions, I routinely play with 2 rail-heads and 2 broadsides, the Broadsides take down thier tanks, rail-heads squish infantry and then run about unmolested before I park them on the objective. Mix them. The hammerhead is virtualy the only tank capable of smashing a Russ apart one turn before squishing a Guard squad the next, it doesnt work so well on SM though but is a God against Nidz.
