I read about this in 'The tau that couldn't hit' Topic and decided to make a topic just for it!
Are Tau too vanilla???
I'll start by saying I think the Tau are great, but they could be better. as mentioned in 'The tau that couldn't hit' topic, the're HQ and ELITES are the same model, I have 2 big porbs with this: 1) Would you rally behind a commander who is in a Crisis Suit while your on foot? And how do you even know it's him??? 2) Although I think the model is great, they should do something special for the Shas'O models. One way GW could solve this would be to make the Commander acting as a FW and you can buy a Crisis, Broadside or Stealth suit for him or a special GQ model. And i don't mean a Farsight type special models, cause when you take away his Sword, he's nothing but a Crisis Suit with big arials on his head and a big shield generator. I want to see something new.
Anougher reason I think Tau are too vanilla is that they have 2 HQ, ELITES, TROOPS, FAST ATTACK AND HEAVY SUPPORT options(I counted any Kroot type unit as a Troops choice cause hounds or ox count as troops in game). I want to see something new come the Codex revisation, Some kind of artillery or a new tank. One of my more defined ideas is a specific transport for Pathfinders, cause they only use 2/3 of the transport capacity of a Devilfish, and they need something stealthy, like a tank that uses stealth armor or something. The Tau also need a close range support unit, not a CC unit but like FWs armed with a Pulse Carbine type weapon to counter a CC unit just before they assault.
I'm sorry if I ranted but when I read that in the other topic something clicked in my head, and I had to get it out. i'm sure theres some of you who believe this and I want to hear what you guys think on the subject.
I agree with your statements MiketehFox. If you've seen the forgeworld models of Tetras, they would be the perfect complement for Pathfinders. It bothers me that I have to take a huge transport into battle with figures that should be closer to Stealth Suits. What I mean is, they should be sneaking around, hitting targets with markerlights, not taking a tank (sans big gun of course) out to "scout around". I am new to Tau, but I just don't see GW's point on that. I'm sure you vets out there can shed some light on this!
I too would like to see a little more variety in choices all around. I would think with Tau having such high tech stuff they could create CC units. They're too weak to fight up close, so they hire out merc's? Make a Crisis suit that fights up close. It doesn't have to be as awesome as a Dreadnought, but seriously. Maybe they love their tech so much, they'd rather sac the Kroot than risklosing a machine. <_< I like the Kroot, but they don't fit with the Tau, IMHO of course.
well I think that sinse the Tau have the Kroot they don't need anougher CC unit, what they need is an ANTI CC unit, Something with good AP weapons with short ranges, or something like that. And althought Pathfinders Have to take a Devilfish it doesn't have to stay with them. ;D
True on both counts. I was thinking of an 'instead of' CC unit. No Kroots at all. And flavor-wise, I would think they would devise a system to deal with their weakness. But hey, Kroot are still cool!Originally posted by MiketehFox@Mar 20 2005, 03:30

And right about the Pathfinders not staying with the Devilfish. I did just realize, it does make sense to drop them "in field", then go back for FW, giving the PF time to do their thing. D'oh! Thanks for your help, pointing out my obvious misunderstanding, ha ha.
I think there should be Tau Fw with jump packs not tau ones that moves 12" in the movement phase. tau with jump pack with pulse carbines like sm assualt marines and have a ws of 3
do gods exist in this world? or did man just made god in his image? if you do not agree answer this, why do we portrait gods as humans? why do our gods look like us? if gods are mighty and powerful then why do they look like the weak.
To quote myself since I don't feel like re-writing it....I abhor using a Gun Drone Squadron too. Just for the fact that I'm playing with a squad of other unit's wargear. Woo....exciting.Originally posted by The Celestial@Mar 19 2005, 215
My major beef with the Tau army(and this is probably just a whiny-fanboy reason) is that the Tau elites and HQs just don't feel.....cool. I love looking at the other armies elites and HQs because they are so unique. One of our HQs is nothing more then our elite with upped stats. Same....exact.....model. And the Aun....well, their fluff is cool but I would never ever field one save a 2K+ point game(even then maybe not). The XV-81, 82, and 83s look killer and I can't wait for the new ruleset for them, but still, I still feel that the Tau army as a whole is very vanilla.
I think Kroot kinda fit into the whole Tau mentality of every race being welcomed for "The Greater Good", and serve as a good example of it, but besides fielding 20 Carnivores for a meat-wall, I don't use any other Kroot.
Oh oh, before I forget...
The Devilfish and the Hammerhead are essentially the same model too, just with some minor changes. It feels like the entire Tau army was "rushed out" by GW at the last second by the guys in charge, kind of like some video games are rushed out by the publisher just to make money.
Record as of 26 December for my Static Tau Cadre.
10 wins, 0 losses, and 1 draw.
Last game: Victory over Necron in a 600 point "kill em all" that lasted til turn 10 ending with a phase out.
The only thing I want to see gw release is a Sept trait system. Also, I would like to have access to heavy weapons, such as rail rilfes of plasma rifles, on firewarrior squads. One more thing would be neat, even though it won't ever happen, is to have models gain +1 (to a maximum of 4) to there BS if not moving.
There once was a Lord named Vlad,
Who's fighting skillz really were mad.
He killed and he maimed,
He spilled blood in Khorne's name.
And the fact that he's legal makes me glad
(special thanks to Uriel Zarium for the last line/touching it up)
Pathfinders - I would like to see having either jump packs or speeder bikes.
Firewarriors - Maybe an open-top skimmer option, also some heavy weapons options
Drones - maybe a missile launcher version
I think the heavy weapons can be left for the Crisis suits. If there would be some heavy weapons for the tau maybe a plasma cannon?
The pathfinders should have some kinda hover pod that looks like a motorcycle with a cover on it. They shouldnt be that powerful though.
I think the HQ's are fine.
If the Tau had uber CC units, they would have no weakness. That would make it unfair.
Heavy weapons on gundrones... I think that would kind of stupid
Please, call me Democracy.
