Should the Ion Cannon be an AP 2 weapon or should it stay as an AP 3. I just noticed that today and I got to thinking. An Ion Cannon is a powerful weapon so why shouldn't it be AP 2. It's a fantastic Marine killer but what about those HQs and Terminators. It is also mounted on a tank and is realitvly exspensive. A Plasma Rifle negates Terminators' saves and only costs somewhere between 14 and 20(I don't want to break LO rules but I'm just making a point) so why shouldn't an Ion Cannon. It just seems a little odd to me. Maybe it's just because of the range but even then it is still a powerful weapon.
What do you guys think?
using that logic, the earthshaker ,particle whip, and krak missiles should all be AP2. Bottom line is that a 2+ armor is tougher than you can imagine.
Bottom line, IMHO no.

I agree. Ap 2 weapons are weapons that have enough power to pierce adamantium. Ap 3 with multiple shots is still really good, and represents the Ion Cannon well. Its a shame I never see people take them that often, they could do a good deal of damage on Marines and Necrons, among other things.

well a plasma gun is described as firing a small sun in some books (cant remember which off the top of my head). plasmas have a much shorter range, so they would lose energy less, and ion cannons are very different, use them for light vehicles, troops, etc. And yes, plasmas are VERY good weapons
The avatar is the emperor as a pimp. Well, i like it.
They're rapid fire. What they lack in quality, they make up for in quantity.
And I almost always field the Ion Cannon. Then again, about 2/3 of my local players play Marines, Chaos or 'Crons, so the Railgun isn't the most effective unit I can bring.

Mech Tau Cadre: 2000 points, needs paint and magnets.
Paladins of Avalon (SW):-1500 points, needs paint.
As much as I would like an Ap2 ion cannon, it's super long range and number of shots would be just TOO powerful. It would make terminators and obliterators almost useless at long range!
Another reason for Plasma's Ap2 is that it is so powerfull that it sometimes overheat, killing the wielder! this is a big problem for rapid fire plasma, as it overheats on 1's and 2's.
The reason (fluffwise) tau's plasma don't overheat is because it's lower powered (lower strength) and the tau probably knows how to make them from scratch. Marines just copy ancient technology "hoping" it'll work...
Second, consider the cost of plasma in a Tau army... only Crisis can have them, and that start getting expensive already... not too far away from Ion heads.
