Welcome to Librarium Online!
I recently got back into 40K and decided to jump in with both feet as Tyranids... I bought a box of Gaunts, a Hive Tyrant, looked at the rate my wallet was emptying and decided to save some money by buying off eBay. I got two sets of the Tyranid sprues from Battle for MacCragge on the cheap, then bought somebody's medium-size army they were selling.
It seems I got a bit oversealous. I now have NINETY SEVEN gaunts!! -- 58 of which are Termagants. Of those, 8 have spinefists (the ones from the box I bought) and the rest have fleshborers.
My question is, is there any strategy I can use that won't result in me putting like $50 worth of minatures permanently on the bench? The manager at my local Games Workshop told me shooty 'nids are going to own all in the new version so I'm not feeling *too* stupid, but it would still suck to have to spend more money in the near-term.
My current inventory:
2 Hive Tyrants (1 with Venom / Scything, the other I don't know yet)
2 Tyrant Guard
a zillion spore mines (but no biovore)
Are there any good strategies to use with this force?
(Yes, my avatar is a scan of the box of the original Space Hulk computer game for DOS.
i think you should wait untill you see the new codex.
Proxy the termies as spinegaunts until you have enough spinegaunts. Also, you should never use more walking gaunts than leapers (I use purely leapers myself). The other hive tyrant IMO would do well winged.
Hive Fleet Furi Kuri 32/21/4
Tomb Kings: 8/5/2
Im in ur Halo, killin ur covernantz
Sit and wait... The FBorers will be made slightly better, as will the SFists. In the end, if range remains the same the only thing that matters will be the points cost: If the FBorer Gaunt is the cheapest Gaunt possible in 4thEd, then quite frankly You've made one heck of a deal!
If not... Well, time to check the alternatives and start converting those Gaunts!
"The meat things seek to destroy ourselves. They hunt us as we hunt them but they are weak and uncertain. The inferior flesh will be entirely destroyed, all biomatter consumed. Ourselves will fight to the last, all weak flesh must be devoured."
Hey! you've got NO problem! Since if your (I hope to God) misinformed and talking out of his... eh... posterior) local store owner is actually right and tyranids are getting more shooty you can have all of mine!
Seriously, would GW do that to us? I bought this army because it's not shooty and because I enjoy seeing hordes of my own troops get moved down before leaping headlong into ranks of fleshy things with sharp claws and gnashing teeth. I've been looking at the rumors re: the new bugs...
Oh yeah, and wait on it. Guys in stores are notorious for wanting to feel like they know what's up when they just really, really don't.
We supply the violence.
well you dont have to go shooty just because the weaponry is upgraded. i think its beacuse they want a balanced amount of shooty and cc gaunts on the table not just hords of scythe and spine
Lots of gaunts is good. I only have 64, and am in the process of getting another 64. That being said, I recently converted 32 termagants into spinegaunts. Because you can't just pull the arms off, use a pair of wire cutters and snip off the fleshborer as close to the torso as possible. Then, put a dab of greenstuff over the nubs that are left, snip off the ball part (the ball that goes into the shoulder socket) of the spinefist, and stick them together. I like to use a little super glue along with the greenstuff, as it becomes really fragile without it. This was an easy conversion, and I am absolutley HORRIBLE at modeling. Trust me, if I can do it, anyone can.
But you should wait until the new codex comes out before you go through that process.
Hope this helped.
You have a lot af gaunts that is good... maybe you should skip a Thrope and get a fex insted and can you use as many spore mines as you like????? have never figured that out
Spore mines are currently (3rd ed) fired by biovores, who have inifnite ammo of the designated type of spore. You do not have to purchase spores as a unit. They can also be used in the preliminary barrage special rules. So, yes, you can carry around 4 trillion spore mines, and place one each time you fire one with a biovore.Originally Posted by Arakiaz
You need some warriors but wait until the release of the new codex. If you really want to give your gaunts different weapons you could buy the bio-morph sprues individually and change out the arms.
