I used to play 40k years ago. It's what I started in but after they released 3rd ed I quit playing. Since then Ive been playing fantasy. After the release of the new spacemarine codex I decided it might be time to return to the first love and see how its doing. But after learning of the extreme Space Marine over population problem, and obviously not wanting to increase the number of stray chapters that just end up getting euthenised, I have decided to try a different army, the nids!
I love the new minatures especially the gaunts and warriors. I also love the whole concept of biomorphs. In fact it was that same kinda customizability that initially drew me to Space Marines. Now I hear that a new codex for the nids might be out soon and I'm wondering if I should hold off on 40k until the new tyranid codex comes out. Still I really want go ahead and start the nid army. So what do you guys think? Should I wait or start now and adapt the army to the new codex later?
yep. as the new codex is really really close you may as well hold off if you want nids. if between now and then you decide to collect a different army then change and buy away. but we're all hoping the new nid codex will be something special, i'd definately recommend you wait.
btw. GW itself has stated that the new codex will be much more customisable than the old. and hopefully we'll be seeing some more variation in the swarm then the same spinegaunts, hormagaunts and winged tyrants.
however, the nid codex may prove a bit too popular (i'm not sure how well the battle of mcragge boxset is doing, so nids may also become a very popular army)
yes and thats the problem if to many people play nids then it will become no fun anymore, thats what initially drew me to nids, the fact that their are not the mega amounts of people playin nids as their people playin other armies. (that and the fact their big mean and nasty killer bugs)
i reckon it will suck if ****loads of people start playin nids(no more crunchy smurfs to eat ) cos every second army you play will be nids.
You can go and buy boxes of gaunts and warriors as these models remain unchanged
And yes, customization is very high with the new nids, the new carnifex for instance has half a page of upgrades available ( not joking here )
il probably do nids when the new codex comes out, as im looking forwrd to be able to do a warrior and genestealer based army
WELL SAID, NO MORE SQUATS THEY ARE DEAD GET OVER ITOriginally Posted by artificer
Hmmm, well I geuss I'll wait then. I'll spend the next coupole of months finishing the dwarf and ogre kingdoms armies instead of working on the tyranids. Besides the people in my local gaming group have said they aren't gonna start their 40k armies for a month or so either. Hey maybe when the new tyranid codex comes out I'll change mind and do a different army instead. I've been away from 40k so long I'm not really sure how all the armies work. May find a different on suits me better. I might even pick up my old army again the IG! Well thanks for the advice guys, it's been very helpful
If you have £150 to spend than i would hold off for the new battle box due for release on the 7th May, you get enough figures there to start you off and there all the new ones plus you get the new codex. If you haven't got that kind of money then you could start your army off by getting some troops, as guants aren't changing. Having said that without the new codex you would be hard pushed to put them together as you will have no idea which the best setup would be. Hold on you only have 2 month before they release the codex and then the rest will follow but i'm going for the battle set, don't need all the models but i can't wait for the codex and as it a month before it released on its owen i buy it with the setOriginally Posted by Achiles

Most of the models are staying the same, and will presumably only get *more* useful and not less with the new codex, so you might as well go with some of the core units right away. The only units that are changing are the Lictor, Tyrant Guard, Carnifex (or is it just turning plastic?), Hive Tyrant (though everyone agrees the new one looks stupid), Zoanthrope, and only minor changes to genestealers. Oh yeah, and don't buy Old One Eye or The Red Terror cuz they're going away. You might as well get started buying gaunts, a good-looking hive tyrant, warriors, raveners, biovores, etc. It's what I did.
serious! whered ya find that out?Originally Posted by Dreachon
Wait for the new codex, get it and start and army in the 4th edition. Everyone knows that the 2nd edition was the best for nids, 3rd was crap and now the 4th is said to be their "come-back"!!! All I know is that the nids are getting a new make-over. Their history is going to be evil, their models are going to look evil and they are going to be evil! Basically, I think GamesWorkshop are trying to get the horror back into the nids. Unlike our last Hive Tyrant and Carnifex who had smiling faces!!!!!
The nids are also getting some old weapons back (bonesword, not a favourite of mine because of appearance) and new bio-morphs. There's a large list of them posted somewhere else. It's as if the tyranids are getting wargear like IG!!!
