Welcome to Librarium Online!
Has any one ever tried to make a tyranid army that was based on stealth and cover. I know lots of people just swarm over thier ofpponents but the ripper swarms and lictors have increased cover saves and genestealers get infiltrate. Add maybe a zoanathorpe to take care of any big nasty fellas and I thought an army like that might do pretty good in a map with a lot of cover like a jungle or city. I'm not sure what you would use as an HQ though.
I would think it would be too few models for too many points. Nids like being noisey!
Personally, I love Lictors, I play mine all the time. A Genestealer/Lictor/Ripper Swarm army would be effective only if you were playing city fight and jungle fight. I would use a cheap walking tyrant just to draw fire, and possibly warriors for extra help for the Genestealers. Use the rippers to hold numerous foes and use the Genestealers/Lictors to kill the expensive troops/HQ choices/Tanks. This would not be effective vs. a swarmy infantry army like us, orks, and IG because most of your stuff doesn't have the the Sv. or the numbers to hold their own. You need something to deal with things like Monoliths/Land Rider type objects, so maybe low point Carnifexi with the rippers? This would have 5-6 creatures in it, so you could have mutants every 2 Rippers and every 5-6 Genestealers, and possibly the Warriors if you take them.
EDIT: Something like Initiative Hormos to deal with swarms, and drop the HT?
hmmmmmmmmmm like the idea
stripped down HT 2 st's 78pts
3 lictors 240pts
40 rippers 400- 500pts (or muti them if you want, like txin sacs n stuff)
24 stealers (txin sacs/ST's) 528pts
and either 1carni with duel vc + bs 158 pts (i think not sure)
or 3 thropes with wb
or 3 biovores with all mines and then spend the lsat points on beefing up your ht if you want (giveing it leaping or something to be a nasty fast jungle suprise)
First of all I play with my friends and one plays catachan jungle fighters so we play in jungle a lot and I'm building a city map so I thought with the amount of terrain in our normal games a "stealth army" could do quite well. I mean can't a lictor get up to like a 2+ cover save at max and the rippers could have pretty good saves too and with all of the terrain you wouldnt have to worry much about as much long range so a zoanathope or two plus some biovores to make troops easy pickings for ambushing lictors.
Oh and HTs cannot get leaping under the current codex
true didnt realise that, then just put some reaveners in the list cos with cover sv's they'll surivive to nail some guys in close combat
also you could take stripped down warriors with leaping as your HQ choice
I was thinking something along the lines of this:
2 broods of 3 cc warriors-252
2 broods of genestealers-384
4 broods of 5 rippers-200
maybe more if you added some mutations
3 broods of 12 gargoyles-360
Then you could either deepstrike the gargs or use them to weaken enemies for your lictors and rippers.
forgetting winged units cant enter terrain so youd be screwed as this army is for terrain-heavy battles

4thEd defines Winged Tyranids as Jump Infantry.
As JumpInf they gain the ability of not using their special movement mode, moving as regular infantry instead and thus allowing them to enter terrain as per the normal rules.
Note that this doesn't help when You Deep Strike, since the creature needs to count as Winged when Deep Striking.
The rumours about 4thEd Codex seem to further confirm this.
"The meat things seek to destroy ourselves. They hunt us as we hunt them but they are weak and uncertain. The inferior flesh will be entirely destroyed, all biomatter consumed. Ourselves will fight to the last, all weak flesh must be devoured."
still if you wouldnt be able to deep strike them then theyd be **** cause of their normal move and no deepstrike
