I see this happen all over these forums, and it annoys the hell out of me. Its when people start a thread and say "I'm gonna collect XXXX, what should I get first and are they any good?"
Infuriating isn't it? They hardly every read through the forum, and just want a quick way to get an army that they can win with.
I really want an Eldar army, but different to the others at my club, so I'm going for the Ulthwé Strike Force. I HAVE read through this forum, and I HAVE been on the GW site. My freing collects Alaitoc, so I know a fair bit already.
I was wondering if there is another USF player here. who could advise me on what units to get first (There it is, the noobishest queston ever... sorry)
BUT I already know the theme I'm going for, and the models that I like, so that will save someone having to say "Tel us what style you like and what models"
Heres what I want to include:
Seer Council (Cos they rock, and look damn excellent)
Guardians (Both defender for the initial firebase set-up, and Storm Guardians cos they look prettey cool, and I believe you can make them WS 5, I 5, with a Warlocks Enhance?)
Support weopon platforms (again for the initial firebase)
Striking scorpions (Both for cc efectiveness when I open the gate, and they look fun)
Basically an infantry force without Walkers, but i'm not sure about Vypers or Jetbikes, would I be wise to include them?
And Dark Reapers, I'm not sure If I want them either, so If anyone can give any tips on what to buy first to get a small, legal, yet decent force, and what units I should or should not include in the final army.
Again, sorry if this is really noobish (despite having played as Tau Orks and Marines for 7 years...) But I would be very gratefull to anyone who responds.
The strike force is a very cool army. But it has it's shortcomings. Having to start half of your army in the webway can suck, as can not having any vehicles. It'd be awesome if you could open the gate after turboboosting a jetbike squad, but I doubt you can. (nope, "characters on jetbikes may not carry a Wraithgate") So, I guess start out with big squads of guardians (they have to be big 'cause once they lose a morale check, they effectively die). I'd wouldn't give the gate squad a weapon platform so they can FoF into position. Inside the gate might be the seer council, the spear of khaine, a scorpion squad, or storm guardians (or give the gate to some storm guardians). Overall, the strike force is really cool and unique, I hope you continue with it.
I basically read the tactica from WD and got hooked.
I want to finish my otks first (actually finish them, paint and all, unlike my other armies...) as Orks are seriously fun, and I'm doing a campaign. Then I'm going to do USF. I love the fluff and the style of play they have. I'm a little peeved as to not getting a falcon like my freind has, as their rock hard, but I get to play with alot more Magiks!!!
And apparently Storm Guardians are a pain to put together? (This won't stop me, I'm in the mood I get into eveytime I get hooked on a new army...)
Guardian Defenders are a pain to put together, at least if your glue dries really fast. Storm guardians can't be very hard since they don't have to hold a weapon with both hands. War Walkers are really annoying to put together, heed my warning! And remember that USF always is more fun in larger games (1500+).
Warhammer Fantasy: Warriors of Chaos, High Elves
Warhammer 40k: Eldar, Space Marines, Orks
I don't really like the look of War Walkers anyway, they look like really crappy sentinals (even though they can be quite effective) And the Imperial sentinal is one of the coolest looking things in their armoury methinks!
I hadn't thought about the large games being better...
But now you mention it a Webgate loses its fun if only one squad comes out of it...
Do you have the option of not using Reserves or a Gate, or would you have to come on as reserves as normal armies do?
If so I could just start with the main firebase units, and use it as a standard Ulthwé list...
Il give you a tip that will save you some losses. Dont read the WD tactica its crap imo the advanced/experienced/vets here know alot better wat to do then those ppl.Originally Posted by KingBurriss

Hope for tomorrow
In that case don't tell me, I'll work it out as I go along, more fun that way!
P.S The Seer Council Boxed set looks shweet, I'll be getting that first!!!
Awesome very awesome, we need more USF players on L-O hahah.
Well seeing how you researched them and such.. you do know they are never recommended as a starter's army, although it can be possibly, expect even more heavy losses as you would with normal eldar? iono possibly..
Things to get:
Seer Council + more warlocks.
Lots of Defender Guardians.
SOME storm guardians. enhance will not boost Intiative, only WS.
Some starcannon platforms.
Remember you can only contain one aspect.
Howling Banshee for power armour foes
Scorps for mass foes.
Avatar works really well in Spear of Khaine with gates.
Dark Reapers are awesome in my opinion, but i still need some rules clarification..
Can Dark reapers come out of gate and shoot the same turn they came out? If so, that could be ownage.
Warwalkers, are excellent for popping out of portal too, though very fragile, purchase these guys last.
Vypers, don't over soup them up they might be over 100+ pts XD. heh equip them with gun and just shoot.
Key Factors to know:
Take MINIMIUM 2 Wraith Gates. Gives and provides tactical flexibility.
IMO Small Games, it is wiser to contain spear of khaine as it is cheaper pts for a pretty nice.
Try not to contain both Seer Council and Spear of khaine in small games, tehy will be points *****s.
-Seer council box set
- 2x Defender Guardian Box set 32 guardians
- 1-2 Heavy Weapons platforms
- 1x Guardian Defender Box Set 16 guardians
- 9x + Exarch either scorps or howling banshee, though you will find that scorps will be more durable vs most armies, so i recommend you get scorps first.
- 2-3 more warlocks
Now do you want more of a hth USF? or Shooty usf?
- Spear of khaine
- 2-4 boxes of Storm Guardians
or something, basically mass guardians would be key.
A debateful subject is if really storm guardians are worth it? Assuming the common enemy will be 3+ savers, they have WS 4, and you would have WS 5, and that would make no significant difference. Defender guardians 20 x, if in range can do 40 shots and 40 hth attacks. IMO defenders would be a more likely way to go.
- More Defender guardians
- Support Platforms
- Dark repears or WW or Vypers..
depends how you want to kill.
If your looking for a USF player to chat with, drop me a private message on L-O,
and i'll send you my messenger chat names, e-mail or whatever XD.
Because it is to hard to give all the concepts all through one post XD and time.
well good luck... XD
Alot of people are saying that war walkers are very useful, but i'm not too keen on the models. Has anyone done any conversions to make them look better or more dynamic? Maybe you could post some pictures or just describe what you did for me. 2 heavy weapons a turn is quite desirable after all!
I was just thinking about a warwalker with the energy field modelled onto it, like a plastic shell. But I'm sure it'd look crappy.
